Summary
- Microsoft emails inactive Xbox Series X owners urging Best Buy trade-ins for up to $375 in gift cards
- Amount is 'up to' $375, so actual trade value may be lower compared with $799 new price
- Likely move to reclaim idle consoles for resale as production costs and RAM shortages drive supply issues
How long has it been since you used your Xbox Series X? If it's been a while, Microsoft would really like it if you'd sell it to Best Buy. The company has been sending out emails to people who haven't booted up their console in a while, asking them if they'd like to trade it in at their local Best Buy for up to $375 in gift cards.
Microsoft asks people with dormant Xbox Series Xs to think about selling it, please
It's likely a move to get more consoles to people who want one
As spotted by Notebook Check, people who own an Xbox Series X but haven't turned it on in a few months are reporting getting an email from Microsoft itself. The email is pretty clear: if your console is sitting around and collecting dust, you can hand it over at Best Buy and score up to $375 in gift cards.
That's just shy of half the price of a new Xbox Series X, which clocks in at $799 right now. Of course, that's the 'up to' price, so the actual amount you'd get when you trade in your console may be lower.
So, why is Microsoft advertising this? The company didn't reveal why, but in my opinion, it's likely Microsoft's bid to inject more consoles into the market. Given how production costs have skyrocketed due to the RAM crisis, I can imagine Microsoft wanting to encourage people with idle consoles to sell them, so that people who actually want to use them can get one.
