By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Mesopotamia Area Representative Lee Mark Chang has fired back after a social media page questioned where his loyalty lies.
In a Facebook post, Chang said he saw a post by the page Belize NOW asking whether he would stand with Belize or China, which it called his “mother country.”
“I am a Belizean of Chinese descent. I am proud of my Chinese heritage, but Belize is my country, my home, and where my loyalty lies,” Chang wrote.
He said he respects Belize’s diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, just as he respects China and its people. But he made clear that honouring his ancestry does not mean agreeing with the Chinese government.
“Being Chinese by blood does not make me any less Belizean,” he said.
Chang pointed to his record, noting he was born in Belize, built his businesses and raised his family here, served as President of the Senate and now represents Mesopotamia in the House of Representatives.
“My ancestors came from China. My future, my family, and my loyalty are in Belize,” he wrote.
