President Bola Tinubu has celebrated Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi on his 90th birthday, describing the Lagos elder statesman as an institution whose wisdom, loyalty and service have shaped generations of political leaders.
In a tribute issued on Tuesday, Tinubu praised Olusi, Chairman of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council (GAC), as a custodian of Lagos’ progressive political heritage and a stabilising force within the ruling party.
“Baba is not just a politician; he is an institution,” the President said.
Tinubu traced Olusi’s public service to 1962, when he served as a councillor in the Lagos Town Council, followed by his membership of the House of Representatives during the Second Republic and his appointment as Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce.
He said Olusi had continued to provide guidance to political leaders as chairman of the GAC, describing him as a bridge between the state’s progressive political tradition and the current administration’s Renewed Hope agenda.
“Prince Olusi bridges our progressive movement of yesterday and today’s Renewed Hope,” Tinubu said.
The President also highlighted Olusi’s influence beyond Lagos, noting his family ties to both Lagos and Ado-Ekiti, which he said reflected the unity of Yorubaland.
He congratulated the elder statesman on his recent installation as Baba Adini of Yorubaland, describing the recognition as a testament to his faith, moral uprightness and contributions to Islam and community development.
Tinubu, who described Olusi as his mentor, ally and counsellor, said the elder statesman had remained committed to the development of Lagos and Nigeria over several decades.
“For decades, he has been my leader, my mentor, my ally, my guide and my counsellor,” the President said.
He added that Olusi had consistently provided direction to the progressive political family, particularly during challenging periods.
The President also commended the 90-year-old for nurturing future leaders, promoting education through the newly launched Prince Tajudeen Olusi Educational Fund and supporting efforts to document the history and traditions of Lagos.
On behalf of the Federal Government and Nigerians, Tinubu prayed for Olusi’s continued good health and strength, expressing hope that he would live to celebrate his centenary.
“Happy 90th birthday, Baba. May God bless you with many more years so we can all gather to celebrate your centenary,” the President said.
