Michael Irvin Delivers Harsh Verdict on Cowboys’ Season

The NFC East as a whole was the biggest loser in Week 5.

The Philadelphia Eagles fell 19-17 to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London after allowing the Jags to return a late kickoff right into field goal range to win the game. The New York Giants and Washington Commanders faced off later in the day, and both had multiple chances to win the game, but a series of costly mistakes on both sides resulted in one of the wildest finishes of the season, leading to a 27-27 tie.

But the Dallas Cowboys' shocking loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night still lingers, and on Monday's episode of "First Take," Cowboys legend Michael Irvin said they were the most disappointing team of anybody in the division last week.

"I'm watching the sideline and not one point, not at one time did I ever see anybody going up and down that sideline saying, 'We're going to win this game. Don't give up. Let's keep going. We're going to win this game.' I was sitting there saying, 'This is ugly. And it looks hopeless,'" Irvin said. "The Dallas Cowboys. They took this, they didn't win the game, but they certainly won in this category. The most disappointing in the NFC East this week."

The NFC East feels completely wide open this season. The Giants currently sit atop the division at 3-1-1, but they've already lost Jaxson Dart for the season and just tied the Commanders, who are in last place at 1-3-1. The Cowboys, meanwhile, are even with the Eagles at 2-3, and both teams have had some brutal defeats.

None of these teams looks overly convincing, and Dallas' biggest problem has again been the defense. They're allowing 395.4 total yards per game, the second-most in the NFL, and 27.2 points per game, the seventh-most in the league.

The Cowboys won just seven games each of the last two seasons, and missed out on the playoffs both years. They appear in line to have the same thing happen again this season, with a defense that can't stop anything on the ground or through the air.

Next up, Dallas will travel to Green Bay to face the Packers on "Sunday Night Football," before a date with the Eagles on "Monday Night Football."
