Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among’s X account has been rebranded as Global Africa Brief, with its previous posts no longer visible, raising questions about the fate of one of Uganda’s most prominent political social media accounts.
The account, previously operating under the handle @AnitahAmong, now uses @GlobalAfricaHQ and carries the name Global Africa Brief. The change has effectively erased the account’s former public identity, although its underlying history and ownership remain unclear.
The rebranding was noticed on October 11. The account, which was created in November 2020, appears to have retained some of its original profile identifiers despite the change of name and handle.
It remains unclear whether Among or her team voluntarily transferred control of the account, whether it was sold, or whether access was lost or compromised. Neither Among nor her representatives had publicly explained the development by the time of publication.
The change comes months after Among withdrew from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament amid investigations into allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment and money laundering. Security agencies had reportedly raided properties linked to her as part of inquiries into her wealth and luxury assets.
Among became Speaker in March 2022 and announced her withdrawal from the speakership race in May 2026, ending her tenure at the helm of Parliament.
In August, President Yoweri Museveni reportedly directed that she be released from house arrest and that criminal proceedings against her be halted, following months of political and legal uncertainty. The announcement was communicated through the X account of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
The disappearance of Among’s former online identity has also revived questions about her history of using social media to communicate with the public.
During her tenure as Speaker, Among at one point disowned social media posts attributed to her, claiming that communications circulating in her name on X were fake. She later continued using the same account, although some observers believed an administrator handled at least part of its activity.
The latest development leaves unanswered questions about who controlled the account before the rebranding and who is now behind Global Africa Brief.
While the account appears to have retained some of its original profile identifiers, there is no public confirmation that it was hacked, sold or deliberately transferred by Among or her team.
Among remains the Woman Member of Parliament for Bukedea District.
