Halloween candy hands teeth a double hit of sugar and acid, and the worst offenders aren't always the sweetest ones. Pixy Stix carries just 1.5 to 2.2 grams of sugar per piece yet still ranks among the 10 hardest treats on teeth, because the study scored acidity and time in the mouth alongside sugar.
Direct Dental, a private dental clinic, tested 30 popular Halloween treats for sourness, sugar per piece and how long each stays in the mouth, then combined the results into one score, giving families a short list of what to ration this year.

Fun Dip is the worst Halloween candy for teeth in Direct Dental's combined score. With a pH of 1.8, it is the most sour of all 30 treats the study tested, and each pack carries 11 to 12 grams of sugar, about three teaspoons.
The powdered candy dissolves in one to three minutes, which sounds brief, but that is still enough for a mouthful of acid and sugar to wash over every tooth.
Lollipops

A lollipop can last 15 to 30 minutes in a kid's mouth, whether they are watching a Halloween movie or walking door to door, so teeth sit in sugar the whole time. Each pop has about 11 grams of sugar, close to three teaspoons, and a pH of 2.3 to 2.4, which makes it both sweet and sour.
Adults are not exempt. A lollipop pulled from the bowl for a slow treat after dinner gives teeth the same long soak.
Laffy Taffy

One piece of Laffy Taffy has 10.3 grams of sugar, nearly four times what a Starburst has, and the gooey chew sticks to teeth for five to 10 minutes.
It gets pushed into the grooves and between teeth, where a quick sip of water cannot reach it, and the sourness, with a pH of 2.5 to 3.0, stays stuck there too.
Caramel apple pops

Caramel apple pops sound like a cozy fall treat, but this sticky hard candy takes 15 to 30 minutes to finish, carries about 11 grams of sugar and has a pH of 2.5 to 3.5.
Few treats keep sugar in the mouth for as long, which is why Direct Dental ranks it harder on teeth than sour candies like Pixy Stix.
Warheads

Warheads round out the worst five. The candy's pH of 2.0 to 3.0 comes from the malic acid that makes it so sharp, and acid like that can soften the surface of teeth. A piece lasts three to seven minutes, and with only four grams of sugar, about a third of what a lollipop carries, it is easy to reach for another.
That matters because, as Simon Hubbard, director of Direct Dental, explains, every additional piece of candy restarts the mouth's recovery process, which depends on saliva restoring its natural balance. Kids who dare each other to try just one more send a fresh wave of acid over their teeth each time.
Pixy Stix

Pixy Stix has the lowest sugar of the top 10, at 1.5 to 2.2 grams per piece, yet it ranks sixth. With a pH of 1.9, it is among the most acidic treats in the study, and that acid can easily wear down the protective layer on teeth.
The powdered candy is a reminder of why Direct Dental combined sourness and sugar into one score and did not rank by sugar alone.
Fruit chews

Fruit chews have a pH of around 2.4 and three grams of sugar per piece, a smaller dose than most of the candies above them. That pH is more acidic than the range for Laffy Taffy.
Like Laffy Taffy, fruit chews are a chewy candy, and the report shows how a chewy texture can stick to teeth for several minutes.
Starbursts

Starbursts have a pH of 2.4 and 2.7 grams of sugar per piece, the second-lowest sugar level in the top 10 after Pixy Stix. The report notes that a single Laffy Taffy has nearly four times as much.
Its pH of 2.4 is more acidic than either Laffy Taffy or Fruit roll-ups, and the report's table lists its texture as sticky and chewy.
Fruit roll-ups

Fruit roll-ups are the least acidic treat in the top 10, with a pH of 3.5 to 4.2, but each piece carries seven grams of sugar and a sticky, chewy texture.
Direct Dental's table lists the texture as sticky and chewy, and the pH is the highest, meaning the least acidic, of any candy in the top 10.
Dum Dums

Dum Dums close out the top 10. This hard candy has a pH of 2.5 to 3.5 and 3.1 to 4.5 grams of sugar per pop, modest figures next to Fun Dip's pH of 1.8 and 11 grams or more of sugar, and still enough to land on the list.
Hubbard's advice applies to every treat here. He recommends eating sweets in one sitting instead of snacking through the afternoon, then rinsing with water and waiting about 30 minutes before brushing, since brushing straight away can wear down softened enamel. With the National Retail Federation expecting Americans to spend about $4.1 billion on candy this year and 96% of Halloween shoppers planning to buy sweets, he also suggests keeping leftover bags out of reach so trick-or-treat night does not turn into weeks of constant snacking.
