Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeping legend Oliver Kahn said he's still unsure whether Jonas Urbig has the necessary quality to become Bayern's number one once Manuel Neuer retires.
"Being the number one means there's no longer a Manuel Neuer, and you have complete responsibility. That's an entirely different situation. As long as things stand this way, I can't tell you whether Jonas Urbig really has what it takes to be the number one at Bayern Munich," he said in the Triple- der Hagedorn Fussballtalk TV show on Thursday evening.
Kahn, however, acknowledged that Urbig has shown "good performances" and has talent.
Urbig has been playing for Bayern since January 2025 and recently made his debut for the Germany national team under Jürgen Klopp.
Former Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann also remains skeptical about Urbig's future.
"I don't think he can become the number one goalkeeper on the national team right away. I think he'll have to take a detour first," he said.
"I don't think he'll be the number one at Bayern Munich in the long run because he's too young," he added.
"He's a great talent, but it's usually difficult to become number one yourself after being number two, comfortably in the slipstream of a world-class number one."
Urbig, 23, is set to succeed Neuer at Bayern and is getting more and more playing time.
"He plays now and then, but there’s still something like his father there. He’s still around to put out the occasional fire, but otherwise, Urbig can really develop here," Lehmann said.
"It would be a totally different story if he suddenly had to start every game or if the team signed someone else who would push him and also want to play."
