Pakistan plans to set up around 3,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country by 2030, the Ministry of Industries and Production has said.
The ministry shared the target in a written reply to the National Assembly. It was responding to a question from lawmaker Malik Shakir Bashir Awan.
Fast Chargers on Motorways First
According to the ministry, the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025-30 envisions an initial phase of 40 fast-charging stations. These will be installed along motorways and selected sections of the National Highway (N-5).
Charging points are planned at intervals of about 50 kilometers on major highways to support the growth of electric transport. Some of this work is already visible, as a major motorway recently got ultrafast EV charging stations.
Fuel Stations and Battery Swapping
Under the policy, fuel stations will be encouraged to install EV charging units. The government also plans to expand fast-charging, Level 2, and Level 1 facilities.
Battery-swapping stations are also planned for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers.
Incentives for Private Investors
To attract private investment, the government is offering a dedicated commercial electricity tariff for charging stations and faster electricity connections.
Public-private partnerships, including viability gap funding arrangements, are also part of the plan. Last year, 3,800 investors showed interest in setting up EV charging stations across Pakistan.
Recycling Old EV Batteries
The policy also covers the collection, transportation, reuse, dismantling, and recycling of end-of-life EV batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries.
The ministry said work is underway on a regulatory framework and a nationwide network of battery collection and recycling facilities.
