Cairo – The head of the Foreign Relations Committee in Egypt’s House of Representatives, Shukry, has reaffirmed that the parliamentary authorization related to defending Saudi Arabia is intended to safeguard Arab national security and does not signal any Egyptian intention to launch military action against Yemen.
Speaking in televised remarks, Shukry stressed that Egypt’s position is not linked to any form of aggression, emphasizing that statements made by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the matter are clear and consistent with Egypt’s diplomatic approach and the doctrine of its armed forces.
He underscored that Egypt is not at war with the Houthis or any other party and that Cairo continues to prioritize avoiding war and military escalation. According to Shukry, the parliamentary authorization granted to the president is specifically tied to defending Saudi Arabia and taking any necessary measures to protect the Kingdom and preserve Arab national security.
Shukry further noted that Arab national security is inseparable from Egypt’s own national security, highlighting the close strategic bond between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He said this connection requires coordinated efforts within a broader Arab framework to confront regional threats and challenges.
The remarks come after President El-Sisi requested parliamentary authorization that would allow Egypt to take necessary steps to provide military support to Saudi Arabia should circumstances require it.
On October 17, El-Sisi stated that Egypt was prepared to take the measures necessary to defend Saudi Arabia if requested by Riyadh. He later clarified on October 21 that any potential Egyptian military action would be limited to defending Saudi territory and borders and would not include launching offensive operations.
