Ademola Lookman scored after coming off the bench to help Atlético Madrid secure a 2-0 victory over Manchester United, while Victor Osimhen featured for the full 90 minutes as Galatasaray suffered a 4-1 home defeat to Barcelona in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League matches.
Lookman sealed Atlético’s victory with a goal in the 79th minute, nine minutes after entering the match as a substitute at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.
The victory extended Atlético’s unbeaten run against Manchester United to five matches and earned the Spanish side their first points in the Champions League league phase.
Lookman inspires Atlético victory
Atlético took the lead just 53 seconds into the encounter when Pablo Barrios converted Alex Baena’s cutback to put the hosts ahead.
Manchester United attempted to respond through Bryan Mbeumo, but Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak made important saves to prevent the visitors from equalising.
Alejandro Grimaldo also came close to extending Atlético’s lead, but his free-kick struck the angle between the post and crossbar.
Johnny Cardoso appeared to have scored Atlético’s second goal, but the effort was disallowed following a video assistant referee review that identified a handball by Marcos Llorente during the build-up.
Lookman eventually doubled Atlético’s advantage in the 79th minute, finishing off the opportunity to secure a deserved victory for the hosts.
Barcelona overpower Galatasaray
At Rams Park in Istanbul, Osimhen played the entire match as Galatasaray lost 4-1 to Barcelona despite taking an unexpected lead.
The Turkish champions went ahead in the 28th minute when Aleksey Batrakov’s effort deflected off Barcelona defender João Cancelo and into the net.
Cancelo made amends shortly before half-time by curling home Barcelona’s equaliser, restoring parity and shifting the momentum in favour of the visitors.
Barcelona subsequently took control of the encounter, with Lamine Yamal providing two assists within four minutes as the Spanish champions completed a 4-1 comeback victory.
Osimhen was unable to prevent Galatasaray from suffering a heavy home defeat, while Barcelona extended their winning run across all competitions to 10 matches.
