Every tennis season ends with one question that fans keep asking. Who will finish the year at the very top of the rankings? This season delivered a dramatic answer that few really predicted in January.
Year-end rankings reward consistency across a full season of travel and competition. They do not care about one thrilling week. They reward the player who keeps on winning when others stumble or step away.
Alcaraz falls to a Belgian underdog
Zizou Bergs of Belgium knocked Alcaraz out of the Shanghai Masters on Monday. The result came less than a week after the Spaniard defended his Tokyo title. It ended a 7-match winning streak.
Bergs broke Alcaraz’s serve 3 times. He also won 79% of the points played behind his own first serve. Those numbers show how much pressure the Belgian applied to Alcaraz throughout the contest.
Alcaraz is 23 and had recently returned from a wrist injury that sidelined him for nearly 5 months. The Shanghai loss ended his remaining chance of finishing 2026 as year-end world No. 1.
Zverev becomes the oldest first-timer
Zverev will be 29 years and 217 days old when the year-end rankings are published on November 23. That makes him the oldest man to finish as year-end No. 1 for the first time.
Andre Agassi did it in 1999 at 29 years and 214 days. Andy Murray did it in 2016 at 29 years and 197 days. Zverev will be 3 days older than Agassi was and 20 days older than Murray.
Zverev is also the first German to finish a season atop the men’s rankings. For a nation with such a deep tennis tradition, the achievement adds another historic chapter to German tennis.
Sinner’s absence opened the door
Jannik Sinner announced on October 6 that his 2026 season was over as he continued treatment for knee inflammation. He has not played a match since beating Zverev in the Wimbledon final on July 12.
Sinner will miss the remaining European indoor swing and the ATP Finals in November. His absence helped open the door for Zverev, who has since clinched the 2026 year-end No. 1 ranking after winning 2 Grand Slam titles this season.
The 25-year-old Sinner has won 5 Grand Slam titles. His team said the focus is on recovery and preparing for 2027. The Australian Open main draw is scheduled to begin January 17.
From ankle injury to world No. 1
Zverev suffered a serious right ankle injury during his 2022 French Open semifinal against Rafael Nadal. He tore 3 ligaments and did not return to competitive action until the start of the 2023 season.
He eventually regained his place among the sport’s elite. Zverev was ranked No. 5 in late March 2024 before returning to the top 4 after winning the Rome Masters that May, and his climb continued into a historic 2026 season.
After clinching year-end No. 1, Zverev called the achievement a dream come true. He also said that a great deal of work and effort had gone into reaching the goal, especially after his comeback from the ankle injury.
Years of Grand Slam heartbreak
Zverev entered the 2026 French Open with three painful major final defeats on his record. In 2020, he squandered a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem in the US Open final in New York City.
The 2024 French Open final brought another loss as he fell to Carlos Alcaraz after leading two sets to one. Then in 2025 Jannik Sinner beat him in straight sets in the Australian Open final.
Zverev is also an Olympic gold medalist. Yet the biggest prizes at the majors kept slipping away until he finally broke through in Paris this June. The long wait made the breakthrough feel far sweeter.
Paris delivers a long-awaited dream
Zverev beat Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in 5 dramatic sets in the French Open final. It was his first Grand Slam title at age 29, ending years of near misses at the sport’s biggest tournaments.
He became the first German man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Boris Becker’s Australian Open victory in 1996. Becker told Eurosport that Zverev had more than earned the victory and said he was very proud of him.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz also publicly congratulated Zverev, saying the performance had inspired and thrilled an entire nation. At the trophy ceremony in Paris, Zverev described his breakthrough as a happy ending at last.
A rare feat in Open Era history
Zverev beat Ben Shelton in 4 sets on Sunday in New York to win his second Grand Slam title. It came about 3 months after his first major title at Roland Garros in Paris.
That made him the fourth man in the Open Era to win his first 2 Grand Slam titles in the same season. Jimmy Connors did it in 1974, Guillermo Vilas followed in 1977 and Jannik Sinner achieved the feat in 2024.
Zverev also became the second German man to win the US Open after Boris Becker in 1989. He had lost the final there 6 years earlier after taking a 2-set lead against Dominic Thiem.
Little-known fact: Zverev comes from a tennis family. His parents, Alexander Sr. and Irina, were both professional players who later coached him. ATP records say Zverev began playing tennis at age 5.
The gap Zverev still must close
Around the time Sinner ended his season, Zverev had 58 wins and 2 Grand Slam titles. Yet his only titles of 2026 at that point were the French Open and US Open, meaning he had not won an ATP 250, ATP 500 or Masters 1000 title.
Against 3 of his biggest rivals, the numbers were less impressive. Zverev had lost all 7 of his 2026 meetings with Sinner, Alcaraz and Djokovic.
Zverev had also lost his 13 most recent matches against those 3 players. Turning that record around in 2027 may be one of his biggest challenges as the first German man to finish a season as ATP world No. 1.
