LAHORE – The Pakistan Super League (PSL) organisers are considering launching a new tournament featuring six-a-side cricket to keep the league active throughout the year and expand its reach to more parts of the country.
The proposed competition could be named HBL PSL Sixes and would be held during the league’s off-season. However, no final decision has been made on the plan.
PSL Chief Executive Officer Salman Naseer said the short-format tournament could offer an additional source of entertainment for cricket fans while helping the league reach smaller cities in Pakistan that have yet to host PSL matches.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is also exploring the initiative as a way to create new revenue opportunities for franchises and media partners.
The proposed format could provide a fresh attraction for supporters during the period between regular PSL seasons, while allowing the organisers to engage fans in cities that have so far remained outside the league’s match schedule.
However, arranging the tournament would involve several challenges, particularly securing the availability of foreign players and developing a suitable schedule that does not clash with other domestic and international cricket commitments.
PSL matches have so far been staged in Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi, with the league seeking to broaden its geographical footprint.
The PCB aims to further increase the competition’s popularity and make it accessible to cricket fans across the country.
If approved, the six-a-side event could provide the league with an additional platform to engage supporters, offer franchises more commercial opportunities and introduce professional cricket to new venues.
For now, the proposal remains under consideration, with further details, including the tournament’s schedule, participating teams and venues, yet to be finalised.
