Game of the week: Paris Saint-Germain v Olympique Lyonnais, Sunday 19:45 (UK)
Let’s see if this game actually goes ahead in its allotted slot. There is talk of moving the game to Saturday as a result of the expected protests on Sunday. That, coupled with an NFL game in the city on the same night, is leading to fear that security services may be spread thin.
In any case, Paris Saint-Germain are the strong favourites here, naturally. They have just beaten Manchester City and Barcelona in consecutive weeks. They have also rediscovered form in Ligue 1, winning all of their last four in the league. Largely, however, those performances have been unconvincing and Luis Enrique must now contend with the absences of Khvicha Kvaratkshelia, Ousmane Dembélé, and Marquinhos. The former may be out until the end of the season. The other two are also big misses.
PSG have the strength and depth to absorb those absences. Désiré Doué has been in red-hot form, whilst Maghnes Akliouche also looks to have turned a corner after a difficult start. But more than ever, there is a dependence on a second-string that has so far struggled. Against Le Mans FC and RC Strasbourg Alsace, Luis Enrique has called in the cavalry around the hour mark to bail his side out. He won’t be able to do that to quite the same extent against Olympique Lyonnais.
Whilst OL sit top of the league, their form has dipped slightly this week. They were lucky to take all three points at home to OGC Nice and they were then completely outplayed by Hoffenheim in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. Lyon also come in less rested, while there remain doubts Paulo Fonseca’s management in these big games.
