Actor Imran Khan, nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, has been asked to leave India by the Mumbai Police, days after he participated in a protest organised by the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The police have given him until October 28 to leave the country, citing action under the relevant provisions of the Immigration Act.
According to the Mumbai Police, action was initiated against Khan because he participated in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen.
The development follows a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who alleged that Khan holds US citizenship and has an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card instead of full Indian citizenship.
Somaiya had urged the police to take action against the actor, alleging that his participation in what he described as an illegal political protest violated OCI provisions and visa conditions.
Khan was among hundreds of people who gathered at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10 to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. His partner, actor Lekha Washington, and his cousin Zayne Marie Khan were also present.
The three were detained by the police during the protest and released later.
Following his detention, Khan shared a picture of himself inside a police van on social media with the caption, “Apparently I'm going for a drive.”
Videos of the actor during the detention also circulated widely on social media. In one clip, he was heard saying “Jai Hind” to the police.
In another video, Khan said he did not know why he had been detained. He claimed that the police had picked up the protesters from the streets and asked them to sit inside police vans.
The actor further said that he and the others detained were driven around in a police van for approximately two hours before being released.
The October 10 protest saw the detention of around 400 people, including members of the Tushar Gandhi-led organisation Hum Bharat Ke Log and activists of the Communist Party of India (CPI).
