Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi authorities held a mass funeral on Tuesday in the northern city of Mosul for 47 victims, including security personnel and civilians, who were executed by the terrorist group of ISIS ten years ago.
Teams from Iraq’s Martyrs Foundation recently unearthed the remains from a mass burial south of Mosul. The Department of Forensic Medicine used DNA testing to positively identify the victims.
During ISIS’s brutal rule between 2014 and 2017, people from places south of Mosul, such as Hammam al-Alil, al-Shura, and al-Qayyarah, were kidnaped and executed. The victims included soldiers, police officers, religious figures, and local civilians.
Under the direction of Nineveh Governor Abdul Qader al-Dakhil, security personnel carried coffins covered in the Iraqi flag during an official ceremony. A public funeral procession headed toward the Qayyarah district for final burial after the central ceremony in Mosul.
In 2014, the terrorist group ISIS took control of large areas in Iraq and Syria before being defeated in 2017.
Over five million Iraqis had to flee the governorates of Nineveh, Salah al-Din, parts of Kirkuk, Diyala, and Anbar because of ISIS control over these areas in 2014.
Although Iraq declared in late 2017 that all of its regions were free of ISIS, the government continues to conduct security operations to hunt out any remaining members of the terrorist group.
