Most NFL seasons break down into quarters, and the Eagles have four games to change direction before the bye, three of them against NFC East opponents. For a Philadelphia team that has dropped three straight games to fall to 2-3, Sunday’s matchup with Carolina begins a stretch that could reshape its division outlook. The Eagles host the Panthers on Oct. 18 before welcoming Dallas for Monday Night Football on Oct. 26. Philadelphia then visits Washington on Nov. 1, returns home to face the Giants on Nov. 8, and then the much-needed Week 10 bye.
Three of the four games are at Lincoln Financial Field. A 3-1 stretch would send the Eagles into the break at 5-4. Going 1-3 would leave them at 3-6, with considerably more work required over the second half of the season.
The first priority is establishing a running game that can support Jalen Hurts and keep the offense out of difficult down-and-distance situations. Philadelphia rushed for 22 yards on 18 carries against Jacksonville, playing without Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby before Will Shipley exited with a foot injury. Returning injured players would help, but Sean Mannion also needs a workable plan for the personnel available. That starts with the offensive line. Jake Majors, Willie Lampkin and Markel Bell played every offensive snap in London as the Eagles adjusted to injuries, Lane Johnson’s retirement and Cam Jurgens’ trade. Landon Dickerson’s potential return could provide stability, although Nick Sirianni did not confirm Wednesday whether the Eagles would activate the veteran left guard.
Philadelphia also needs more consistent passing and better second-half production. Hurts completed 21 of 40 passes for 220 yards against Jacksonville. The Eagles led 14-7 at the break but managed only a field goal in the second half, allowing another winnable game to slip away.
Carolina will provide a meaningful test of whether Philadelphia can sustain drives while defending an explosive offense. The Panthers are coming off their bye, and Bryce Young threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns without an interception in their most recent game against Detroit.
The team must improve in finishing games across all three phases. Philadelphia took the lead against Jacksonville with eight seconds remaining, then surrendered the kickoff return that set up the winning field goal. Those situational mistakes become especially costly when division games are decided by a possession.
A win over Carolina would restore Philadelphia to .500. A dependable ground game, sustained offense after halftime, and closing out possessions would give the Eagles something to carry into the three division matchups that follow.
