The highways agency Rijkswaterstaat has lifted restrictions on the IJssel river that forced ships carrying freight from Arnhem to Zutphen to take a 300km detour.
A one-way system was imposed on September 24 after the river level dropped as a result of the summer drought both in the Netherlands and further upstream in Germany and Switzerland.
The agency said it was able to allow ships to travel in both directions now that the water level has risen to 1.45m above its baseline, but it warned that the drought period is “not over”.
Koninklijke Binnnenvaart Nederland, which represents inland waterway users, said the ending of the restriction was welcome, but shipping operators were still having to contend with limitations such as transporting lighter loads.
“The problems are not over. Low water is still having a big impact on inland shipping,” a spokesman said.
