The Kansas City Chiefs are sitting at 4-0, and the identity of this offense is shifting right before our eyes. While fans love seeing Patrick Mahomes throw deep, the real magic is happening on the ground. The team is running the ball with a style that feels like a throwback to 1997.
According to Yahoo Sports, the addition of running back Kenneth Walker III has changed the entire math for this squad. He isn’t just a piece of the plan; he is the engine. Walker is currently leading the league in almost every major statistical category. He has already broken loose for massive plays of 60 and 76 yards. This isn’t just about luck, either. The coaching staff is leaning into a new approach using under-center handoffs, screens, and play-action. It works.
Young Talent Stepping Up
The bye week brings some tough news for the wide receiver room. Tyquan Thornton is out for a while after a bad ankle injury in the Week 4 win over the Raiders. On top of that, Rashee Rice is dealing with a hamstring issue and missed practice on Wednesday. Together, these two players accounted for 409 of the team’s 1,037 receiving yards so far this year.
But don’t count the depth out just yet. Xavier Worthy is finding his rhythm after a slow start. He caught four passes for 70 yards during that Week 4 victory. Coach Andy Reid noted that “[Thornton] was having a very good year, and I’m sad to see what happened to him because of that.” Mahomes is also ready to trust the next group of guys.
Patrick Mahomes believes more practice time will help the new starters. He said, “It’s going to make it easier for them.” The quarterback is already testing Jalen Royals and Cyrus Allen with difficult routes. Mahomes explained, “They’ve put in the work,” when talking about the young duo’s preparation.
Defensive Pressure and Roster Shifts
The defense is playing well, but there are some cracks in the armor. The pass rush has been a struggle lately. The Chiefs haven’t recorded a sack since Week 1, and their pass rush win rate sits at 27th in the league. According to reports, the team only beats the opponent’s protection within 2.5 seconds about 45% of the time.
Even though the sacks aren’t coming, the pressure is there. Andy Reid said on Monday, “We’ve done a good job of keeping the quarterback busy back there, though, with pressure, which is important.” He also added, “Hands down, we want to have sacks. But the pressure on the quarterback ends up being an important thing, and I think our guys have been generating that.”
Players to Watch
As the roster changes due to injuries, a few names are trending upward. Beyond the young receivers, offensive lineman Kahlil Benson is playing much better than anyone expected. He wasn’t even a top priority during the draft process, but he has held his own as a starter. On the defensive side, cornerbacks Mansoor Delane and Nohl Williams are looking like an elite pair if they stay healthy.
The Chiefs head to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, October 18, to face the Los Angeles Chargers. If the run game stays this strong, the rest of the AFC is in trouble.
