Speaker Andreas Norlén has tasked Center Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist with examining whether there is scope for a government in the political centre.
She says she is humbled by the assignment.
My ambition is to contribute to a solution to the government issue, not to become prime minister myself, she says.
The centre-right government Thand Ringqvist will now examine the prospects for would consist of the Social Democrats, the Green Party, the Centre Party, the Christian Democrats and the Liberals, with Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson as prime minister.
In the centrist alternative we see before us, the most likely candidate for prime minister is Magdalena Andersson, who leads the largest party, she says.
Inviting everyone
However, Thand Ringqvist will invite all party leaders to talks.
Also Nooshi Dadgostar (V), Ulf Kristersson (M) and Jimmie Åkesson (SD).
I want to get a view of the entire political landscape in this assignment and understand how everyone thinks, she says.
However, according to Thand Ringqvist, this does not mean that the Centre Party has changed its position on having either the Left Party or the Sweden Democrats in government.
Do you see any kind of opening for cooperation with the right?
No, I have been assigned to look at a centrist option.
Has anything changed in the Centre Party's view of the Left Party?
No, it's stuck.
We know that Sweden is facing major challenges, including high unemployment, climate challenges and welfare services that do not work across the country.
“Good relationship”
According to the Centre Party, the solution is to create growth.
Then you have to do it with parties that share both the starting point and solutions, she says.
The Centre Party leader says she has a good relationship with both the Liberals and the Christian Democrats. For example, she was recently photographed after a sauna meeting with Christian Democrat leader Ebba Busch.
How do you see your chances of succeeding with this?
There are many deadlocks in Swedish politics that make it difficult to form an effective centrist government. Those deadlocks also exist on the left. So the starting position is very difficult, she says.
