The Ebonyi state Commissioner for Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Chief Sunday Inyima, has warned against politicising the murder of his younger brother, Egeonu Inyima, just as police confirmed the arrest of suspects in connection with the killing.
Inyima, who described suggestions of a political motive as misleading and unfounded, called for a thorough investigation to identify those responsible and ensure justice for the deceased.
The commissioner spoke in a statement while receiving members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ohaukwu local government area, who visited his country home in Izhiangbo to commiserate with him over the incident.
Egeonu was reportedly lured to a primary school in Umuogudu-Oshia Ngbo, where he was allegedly beaten to death by assailants described as miscreants. The circumstances surrounding the killing is still under investigation.
Rejecting attempts to link the incident to political disagreements, Inyima urged the public to disregard unverified accounts capable of creating confusion and tension in the local government area.
“Though I am severely traumatised by the gruesome murder of my younger brother, I wouldn’t want anyone to suffer unjustly. No innocent person should be roped in to suffer for a crime he or she did not commit,” he said.
He further urged security agencies to remain impartial and resist interference in the investigation, adding that nobody, regardless of status, should be shielded or unfairly implicated.
“Nobody, and I mean no one, no matter who, including myself, should interfere in the matter. The legal process must be allowed to go unscratched until justice is fully served,” he added.
