Jadon Sancho has received a formal contract offer from Getafe that would see him earn just £400,000 until the end of the season, according to The Telegraph.
This number is a drastic reduction from his reported £250,000-a-week Manchester United salary.
The Spanish club proposed paying the 26-year-old winger €400,000 (£335,000) in total wages until June as they try to bolster their squad despite financial constraints.
Sancho has been a free agent since his Manchester United contract expired at the end of last season. He is still available to join another club outside the transfer window.
The former England international wants to play in La Liga and believes a move to Spain could revive his career after several difficult years.
However, Sancho wants to meet Getafe manager Jose Bordalas before making a final decision.
The Spanish tactician has publicly expressed frustration over the club’s recruitment strategy and lack of squad depth.
Manchester United signed Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for £73 million in 2021, but he struggled to justify the big-money investment.
He subsequently returned to Dortmund on loan before spending time at Chelsea and Aston Villa, where he made 39 appearances last season.
Sancho was part of the Chelsea squad that won the Conference League and the Villa squad that won the Europa League final.
The winger has been maintaining his fitness, posting training videos on Instagram.
He also visited non-League side Flixton, prompting the North West Counties League club to clarify that he was not on trial with them.
A move to Getafe could give Sancho a chance to rebuild his reputation in one of Europe’s major leagues.
But Sancho’s proposed wages will likely attract attention from La Liga officials.
The league recently scrutinised and almost jeopardised an agreement involving former Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal, who joined Getafe on relatively modest wages after earning big money for years.
La Liga likes to ensure its clubs don’t take on financial commitments that could hurt them later.
Getafe currently sit 15th in La Liga and hope Sancho’s potential arrival could provide an attacking boost as they compete on multiple fronts.
Whether the winger accepts such a substantial financial sacrifice remains to be seen, but the opportunity to relaunch his career in Spain is something he must seriously consider.
