The renovation in Namuwongo, funded through Carrefour’s Round Up Your Bill initiative, has improved classrooms, sanitation facilities and other essential spaces for an organisation supporting 165 vulnerable children.
Carrefour Uganda has renovated a facility operated by In Need Home, a community organisation supporting vulnerable children and families in Namuwongo, Kampala, through its customer-funded Round Up Your Bill initiative.
The improvements, handed over on October 16, 2026, included the renovation of classrooms, offices and sanitation facilities, alongside repairs to roofs, windows, ceilings, doors and water gutters. The facility was also replastered and repainted.
In Need Home Executive Director Michael Tumwesigye said the renovations had improved the safety and hygiene of the facility, creating a more suitable environment for the children under the organisation’s care.
“Carrefour Uganda’s support has significantly improved the safety, hygiene and quality of life at In Need Home. From replacing bamboo staircases with terrazzo-finished stairs to upgrading our toilets with modern flushing facilities, the improvements have created a safer, cleaner environment for the children,” Tumwesigye said.
He added that the renovated classrooms, offices and other essential spaces would provide a better setting for learning and development.
“We currently accommodate 45 children at the home and support a total of 165 children, including those placed in different schools,” he said.
In Need Home supports vulnerable children, including orphans from disadvantaged communities, some of whom are living with HIV.
The renovation was funded through Carrefour’s Round Up Your Bill initiative, which allows customers to voluntarily round up their purchases at checkout, with the additional amounts channelled towards community development projects across Uganda.
Carrefour Uganda said the initiative had raised more than Shs630 million to date, supporting six projects across the country.
The programme forms part of Majid Al Futtaim’s wider sustainability strategy, which focuses on education, health, community development and economic empowerment in the markets where the group operates.
