Federal and Bahia forces arrested a man on Wednesday over the 31 July gunfire at Guarulhos airport. Officials have not named him or said what charges he faces.
A Guarulhos shootout suspect was arrested in Bahia on Wednesday, 14 October, after a July clash with Federal Police. He was caught in Governador Mangabeira, in Bahia’s Recôncavo region, 75 days after the 31 July clash at the airport.
Guarulhos is São Paulo’s main international airport, so the case matters to US travellers who fly to Brazil. Bahia’s security secretariat, SSP-BA, announced the arrest, and BNews, Acorda Cidade and Aratu On carried it that evening.
What Happened in Bahia on 14 October
The arrest came on Wednesday afternoon, the SSP-BA statement says. The man tried to flee in a Chevrolet Montana pickup, but officers surrounded the vehicle and detained him.
The SSP-BA statement says he had two outstanding arrest warrants. It does not say which court issued them or for what offences.
Three units took part, the SSP-BA statement says. They were the Federal Police’s São Paulo Sensitive Investigations Group (GISE/SP), FICCO-BA and the 27th Independent Company of the state Military Police.
FICCOs are task forces against organised crime, coordinated by the Federal Police, Brazil’s national investigative agency, with state agencies in every state. FICCO-BA is the unit for Bahia.
Eduardo Badaró, the federal police delegate who coordinates FICCO-BA, said the suspect “chose the wrong state to try to hide”. The words are translated from Portuguese, and he stressed the value of shared intelligence, the SSP-BA statement said.
What Is Known About the Guarulhos Shootout Suspect
Neither the SSP-BA statement nor the outlets name the man. The statement describes him as an alleged faction member but does not say which faction, so that detail remains unconfirmed.
He is suspected of shooting at federal forces at the airport, but no report describes his alleged role in the clash. Nor do they say whether his two warrants relate to that case.
The 31 July Clash at Guarulhos Airport
On Friday, 31 July, at about 2:30 p.m., agents detected unusual movement in a restricted area of Guarulhos airport. About ten people in four vehicles had cut a hole in the perimeter fence, Metrópoles reported, citing the Federal Police.
The Federal Police said the group was trying to load cocaine onto an aircraft bound for Europe. Agents and suspects exchanged gunfire, and no one was injured, Metrópoles and BNews São Paulo reported.
Agents recovered about 400 kilograms (880 pounds) of cocaine: five bags already on the aircraft and four abandoned boxes. The suspects fled into woodland near the airport, leaving phones for forensic analysis, Metrópoles and O Antagonista reported.
At least two people had been arrested by 2 August, Metrópoles and Diário do Grande ABC reported. Accounts of the exact number differ, and the Federal Police said it would keep working to identify and locate everyone involved.
Why Guarulhos Matters Beyond Brazil
Guarulhos handled 47.2 million passengers in 2025, its operator GRU Airport said, Gazeta de São Paulo and Aviacional Dia reported. Gazeta de São Paulo calls it the main arrival and departure point for Brazil’s international flights.
The Federal Police seized almost 4,000 kilograms (about 8,800 pounds) of drugs at Guarulhos in 2025, SBT News and Metrópoles reported. Cocaine was 46% of the total, mainly bound for Europe, and 820 people were arrested at the airport that year.
What It Means for US Readers
Guarulhos is Brazil’s main international gateway, so the case is relevant to Americans flying to São Paulo. Reports of the July clash mention no injuries, and the group was after a drug shipment bound for Europe.
The US State Department rates Brazil Level 2, exercise increased caution, and advises care at major transportation centres, especially at night. The advisory was last issued on 31 August 2026, after the July clash, and does not mention it.
The Brazilian website of American Airlines lists flights from Guarulhos to Miami, Dallas-Fort Worth, New York JFK and other US cities. The page is a fare listing and does not state how often the flights operate.
Americans planning a trip can check entry rules in The Rio Times guide to the Brazil e-visa for US citizens. Airline schedules change by season, so confirm flights with the carrier.
What Is Not Known
The suspect’s name, the court that issued his two warrants and any formal charges have not been made public. Officials have also not said what role he allegedly played in the July clash or which criminal faction he is linked to.
The SSP-BA statement is the only official account published so far, and no Federal Police release on the arrest could be found. The number of people arrested in July also varies between outlets, from one to three.
What Comes Next
No court date or transfer has been announced for the suspect. The Federal Police said in July that it would keep working to identify and locate everyone involved.
