Ourcover star today is Nosipho Tembe, known to her clients as ‘Mavesh’, a dynamic make-up artist and hairstylist based in the vibrant city of Manzini. She is a passionate creative who believes every face is a canvas waiting to be transformed into a masterpiece.
Her journey began in childhood. Growing up, she was the young girl who would braid her dolls’ hair and sneak away to try on lipstick in the mirror. Today, that ambitious young girl is living her childhood dream and making a significant mark on the beauty industry in Eswatini.
What she values most about her identity as a liSwati woman is the ability to experience herself through varied cultural and modern aspects. She embraces the rich beauty of her local heritage with dignity and pride while remaining able to slay a full glam look in traditional attire. This balance creates a harmonious blend of culture and contemporary aesthetics. Beyond the fashion, she treasures the strong sense of community among local women. Looking around her journey, she notes that her work and professional growth have consistently been encouraged and pushed forward by women.
Experimenting
Her interest in beauty was sparked early on. Throughout her youth, she enjoyed styling hair, creating new hairstyles and experimenting with make-up looks on herself before trying them out on her sisters and friends. Over time, she realised she was not simply playing with cosmetic tools. She was actively building self-assurance. That revelation inspired her to transform a beloved childhood passion into a thriving profession. Today, her inspiring clientele who trust her expertise and support her work continue to keep her inspired every single day.
She is proudly self-taught rather than a product of a formal beauty institution. Her skills were truly sharpened during the Covid-19 lockdown period. During those months, she spent endless hours studying YouTube tutorials, recreating intricate make-up styles and hairstyles on herself, her sisters and friends while learning valuable lessons from every trial and mistake.
The journey has not been without its obstacles. The most challenging aspect of her work remains sourcing the correct beauty products and hair materials to achieve high-quality results. While accessibility has gradually improved over time, the country still faces a shortage of specific materials required for emerging global beauty trends.
Despite these supply challenges, the rewards far outweigh the difficulties. The most gratifying moment is watching her hard work pay off when clients react positively to their transformations in the mirror. The sincere compliments she receives remain deeply meaningful. Furthermore, receiving spontaneous photographs from clients following their appointments brings a lasting sense of fulfilment that surpasses formal accreditation. Knowing that pure passion taught her everything remains her greatest professional reward.
Services
A typical work day starts long before the appointments begin. Because she offers on-site services, her preparation starts the night before by meticulously packing her travelling kit. She checks every brush, verifies every foundation shade, inspects her heating tools and confirms she has tailored products for every client on the schedule.
On the day of service, she travels directly to the client’s location and sets up a customized station. Before applying any products, she initiates a thorough consultation to discuss the client’s outfit, the nature of the event and how the client wishes to feel. Once aligned, the creative process begins, spanning thorough skin preparation, precise make-up application and hair design.
Between mobile appointments, she remains on the road, responding to new booking enquiries and creating engaging digital content for her online platforms. Her demanding schedule ends late in the evening upon returning home, where she unpacks, cleans and sanitises all tools for the upcoming day.
Despite the physical demands of travelling, she finds immense satisfaction in bringing professional glam directly to her clients’ doorsteps, allowing them to feel comfortable and confident within their own homes.
Her core strengths lie in her innate creativity and exceptional patience. She will diligently blend eyeshadow until it is smooth and secure lace applications until they appear completely natural. Active listening forms the cornerstone of her client relations. Conversely, her self-admitted professional weakness is perfectionism; she occasionally takes longer than planned because she strives to deliver an immaculate, photo-ready result for every individual.
Commitment
What sets her apart from other beauticians is her commitment to prioritising the client’s vision over personal preference. She listens attentively to what each individual desires and brings that specific vision to life rather than imposing a uniform style. While many beauty professionals enforce a rigid signature look on every client, she recognises that every face and personality is unique. Her objective is always to enhance natural features rather than showcase her own aesthetic. This client-centred philosophy has earned her lasting professional trust and repeat business.
When it comes to techniques, she is dedicated to thorough skin preparation. She prefers products that maintain a natural texture, favouring hydrating primers paired with full-coverage yet lightweight foundations. She completes her applications with reliable setting sprays to ensure the finished look remains flawless throughout the day. For hair styling, she focuses on sleek, neat instals and soft, defined curls to achieve a clean, timeless aesthetic that looks striking both in person and in photography.
She firmly believes that beauty carries therapeutic qualities. When a woman feels beautiful, her presence changes; she speaks with conviction, carries herself with poise, pursues career opportunities and establishes healthy boundaries. Beauty serves as a tool of empowerment rather than mere vanity.
For aspiring creatives, her advice is simple: start with what is available. Success does not require luxury products at the beginning; it requires passion, practice and consistency. Continuous skill development and investment in craft are essential.
Her personal beauty routine mirrors her professional standards, emphasising proper skincare, daily hydration and consistent sun protection. In her daily personal life, she opts for a minimal, hydrating skincare regimen paired with a defined lip combination and setting spray.
When seeking creative inspiration, she avoids relying on a single role model, choosing instead to learn from diverse industry talents and adapting those influences into her signature style. Outside her professional work, she is a homebody who values quiet time, spending quality hours with family, editing content for TikTok and refining her beauty techniques.
