Police have issued a second precautionary warning ahead of the weekend, following two reports of bags being snatched from visitors by individuals on motorbikes.
A complaint was filed yesterday after a motorcyclist snatched a backpack from a female tourist riding an e-bike from the airport towards Vaimaanga.
“The motorcyclist drove alongside the visitor, grabbed her backpack and made off,” police said in a statement.
“The male rider was described as wearing brown shorts and a dark T-shirt.”
On Thursday night, Police received a similar complaint from a female tourist walking along the main road in Muri. Two individuals on a motorbike drove past and snatched her bag containing personal property.
Police are urging members of the public, particularly pedestrians and cyclists, to remain vigilant and take extra care with their personal belongings.
“Bags should be kept secure and, where possible, away from passing traffic.
“Anyone witnessing suspicious behaviour or having information that may assist Police with these incidents is urged to contact Police on 22499.”
Meanwhile, police are urging motorcycle owners and riders to be vigilant over the security of their vehicles this weekend, particularly overnight.
“The unlawful taking of motorbikes is a current concern, and Police are reminding owners of the vulnerability of unattended motorcycles,” police said.
“Every precaution should be taken to reduce the risk of theft, including removing keys, locking the steering and parking in a secure, well-lit and visible location.”
Police strongly advise owners not to leave their motorbikes unattended in town overnight.
