BJP Telangana president N. Ramchander Rao has urged Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to immediately convene an all-party meeting on El Nino climate phenomenon impact, consult related experts and prepare a realistic assessment of the losses suffered by farmers.
“We do not intend to politicise El Nino. But, the government must convene an all-party meeting immediately, seek expert advice and work out a comprehensive strategy to address the situation,” he said on Friday.
In an informal interaction with the media at the State office on Friday, he accused the Chief Minister of cancelling a proposed all-party meeting on El Nino and travelling to Delhi in a special aircraft, alleging that political considerations surrounding Rahul Gandhi had taken precedence over the State’s pressing concerns.
He further charged that the government meetings being organised in the name of El Niño were being used to discuss forthcoming MLC elections and the ‘Delhi politics’ instead of focusing on the potential agricultural crisis and farmers’ welfare.
Mr. Rao advised the State Government to first submit a comprehensive report detailing the actual damage and realistic financial requirements. The Centre would assess the report and provide the necessary assistance, he said with regard to the Government’s plan to seek ₹20,000 crore in central assistance.
The party’s national general secretary Sunil Bansal would soon convene a meeting to shortlist probable names for MLC polls and these would be forwarded to the party’s national parliamentary election committee for a final decision, he added.
Full support
Meanwhile, the BJP has announced full support for the demand for relocation of the Jawaharnagar dump yard and the proposed ‘padayatra’ by Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender. At a preparatory meeting, Legislative Party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy stated that the BJP’s state president, along with its MPs, MLAs, MLCs, and other party leaders, would all participate in this movement.
Launching a trenchent attack on the Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, he said very people who provided his political break—electing him as an MP and supporting his rise to the top post—are now the ones suffering severely due to the dump yard. Residents of the area have been facing severe hardships including health issues; with approximately 10,000 metric tonnes of waste accumulating daily in the last three decades, he said.
Mr. Rajender stated that the time has come to demand the Government to find a proper solution and this was possible by demanding transfer of the dump yard and closure of the existing facility. The MP vowed to continue to exert pressure on the government until justice is served to the affected people and a permanent resolution to the dump yard issue is achieved.
