Given the way the Boston Celtics lost to the Detroit Pistons on Opening Night, falling 121-113 on Tuesday (Oct. 20) night on the road after leading by as much as 22 points, it ought to come as no surprise that Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla was nonplussed by the result. But the West Virginia alum wanted to make it clear in a recent interview for "Zolak and Bertrand" in a new clip hosted on the official NBC Sports Boston YouTube channel. "I'm also not happy when we win," he explained.
"And I think it's one of the strengths of the locker room," he added. "It's one of the things that I think the guys are doing really good here; there's a relatively consistent process to the next day, regardless of the result. And so, yes, I'm pissed off after loss ... I hate losing. But I also don't leave the arena doing jumping jacks if we win. There has to be a level of (knowing) ... every time you win, there's still things that you did that lead to losing."
"And to me, when you lose, there's usually things that you do that lead to winning," explained the Celtics coach.
"As long as it's not an effort thing," he said. "The next day becomes a serious issue, it's just like an effort thing. We didn't compete. We didn't give it everything that we had. And that (is) very, very rarely the case."
"We beat the guys that we've had. So the process has to stay consistent, not overanalyzing wins and not overanalyzing losses. How can we get better than we've done in the same result?"
