Southwest Airlines built its network on short domestic sectors, with an average flight length well under two hours and a fleet consisting entirely of
Boeing 737s. According to Cirium schedule data, the six longest routes it operates are all Pacific crossings to Hawaii, and four of the five depart from just two mainland airports. Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) and Harry Reid International (LAS) account for every route in this ranking, serving Honolulu (HNL), Kahului (OGG), Lihue (LIH), and Kona (KOA).
Each operates on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 in Southwest's standard 175-seat single-class configuration, and each runs daily or better across the 2026 schedule. The longest, Phoenix to Honolulu at 2,918 miles (4,696 km), consumes roughly 71% of the aircraft's published range. The busiest, Las Vegas to Honolulu, carries 902 flights and nearly 158,000 seats in each direction, more seat-miles on its own than the other four routes in this ranking combined.
6 Las Vegas – Kahului
2,695 miles (4,337 km)
Southwest operates 370 flights in each direction between Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) and Kahului Airport (OGG), carrying 64,750 seats and generating 174,501,250 available seat miles per direction. The flight count sits five above daily service year-round, making it one of only two routes in the top 20 longest pairings to exceed daily frequency by exactly five. Seats divide evenly at 175 per departure, matching every other Hawaii route in Southwest's network.
Kahului is the second most-served Hawaii destination in the schedule data, behind Honolulu. Southwest reaches it from three mainland gateways: Las Vegas at 370 flights, Phoenix at 365, and San Diego at 302, for a combined 1,037 departures in each direction. No other Hawaiian airport outside Honolulu draws that level of service. Lihue appears in Las Vegas and Los Angeles only. Kona receives service only from Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Hilo appears from Las Vegas alone at 73 flights.
The route also completes a set. Las Vegas is the only mainland airport in the data connecting to all five Hawaii destinations Southwest serves, with 902 flights to Honolulu, 370 to Kahului, 365 each to Lihue and Kona, and 73 to Hilo. That totals 2,075 departures in each direction, which is more Hawaii flying than any other Southwest gateway by a wide margin. San Diego, the next largest, reaches Honolulu and Kahului for a combined 1,032. The distance figures make Kahului the second-shortest of the five Las Vegas routes, ahead of only Hilo at 2,664 miles, which is why a route with above-daily frequency still sits outside the longest five.
5 Las Vegas – Kona
2,717 miles (4,373 km)
Southwest operates 365 flights in each direction between Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) across the 2026 schedule, which works out to exactly daily service year-round. Each direction carries 63,875 seats and generates 173,548,375 available seat miles. At 175 seats per departure, the route runs on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 in Southwest's standard single-class configuration.
Kona sits on the west coast of Hawaii Island and is Southwest's farthest Hawaiian destination from the state's population center, Honolulu. The airport serves the resort corridor along the Kohala Coast and is the main gateway for visitors heading to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the eastern side of the island. Southwest's second Big Island airport, Hilo (ITO), appears further down the list at 73 annual flights from Las Vegas, which is roughly one departure every five days.
Las Vegas functions as Southwest's primary Hawaii gateway, and the data shows why. The airport appears in more long-haul pairings than any other mainland city in the network, connecting to Honolulu, Kahului, Lihue, Kona, and Hilo. Three of the five longest routes Southwest operates depart from Las Vegas. That concentration reflects the airport's role as one of the carrier's largest bases combined with the leisure traffic between two destinations built around tourism. A passenger connecting from Denver, Chicago, or Nashville onto a Hawaii flight most likely routes through Las Vegas, giving the route a feed a pure origin-and-destination market would not provide.
4 Las Vegas – Honolulu
2,762 miles (4,445 km)
This is the busiest long-haul route in the Southwest network by a considerable margin. The carrier operates 902 flights in each direction between Las Vegas and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), carrying 157,850 seats and producing 435,981,700 available seat miles each way. That works out to an average of roughly 2.5 departures per day, with the frequency concentrated into peak periods rather than spread evenly across the year.
No other route on the list comes close on capacity. San Diego to Honolulu is the second-largest at 730 flights and 333,938,500 ASMs, roughly 77% of the Las Vegas figure. Los Angeles to Honolulu runs 516 flights and 230,806,800 ASMs. The gap between Las Vegas and everything else indicates Southwest treats the route as the backbone of its Hawaii operation rather than one city pair among several, and the 902 figure means the route alone accounts for more seat-miles than the four other routes in this ranking combined.
Honolulu is the obvious anchor for that volume. The airport handles the largest share of visitor arrivals to the state and serves as the connecting point for interisland traffic onward to Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. A passenger flying Las Vegas to Honolulu may be ending their journey in Oahu or continuing to another island, which broadens the addressable market beyond what a direct Las Vegas to Kahului flight can capture. The distance also sits comfortably inside the 737 MAX 8's capability at roughly 2,400 nautical miles, leaving Southwest a substantial margin on an overwater sector where diversion options are limited.
3 Las Vegas – Lihue
2,818 miles (4,535 km)
Lihue Airport (LIH) on Kauai is the third-longest destination from Las Vegas and Southwest's longest route out of the airport. The carrier runs 365 flights in each direction, again exactly daily across the year, carrying 63,875 seats and generating 179,999,750 available seat miles per direction. The configuration matches every other Hawaii route at 175 seats on the 737 MAX 8.
Kauai is the smallest market of the four main Hawaiian islands Southwest serves, and the schedule reflects that. Lihue receives daily service from Las Vegas and appears only twice more in the top 20 longest routes, with 23 annual flights from Los Angeles. By comparison, Honolulu appears in pairings with Las Vegas, San Diego, Los Angeles, Ontario, Long Beach, Burbank, and Phoenix. Kahului draws daily Phoenix service plus 370 flights from Las Vegas and 302 from San Diego. Lihue is served, but it is not a market Southwest has scaled.
The distance is worth noting against the smaller market. At 2,818 miles, Lihue from Las Vegas is longer than Honolulu from the same airport, because Kauai sits at the northwestern end of the main island chain. Southwest flies its longest Las Vegas sector to the island with the thinnest demand, a function of geography rather than strategy. Any carrier serving Kauai from the mainland faces the same trade. The route works because 175 seats is a capacity point that matches what the market can absorb, and a larger aircraft on the same sector would require demand Kauai does not generate year-round.
2 Phoenix – Kahului
2,845 miles (4,579 km)
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) to Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui is the second-longest route in the Southwest network. The carrier operates 365 flights in each direction, daily service across the full year, carrying 63,875 seats and generating 181,724,375 available seat miles per direction. The numbers are identical to the Las Vegas to Lihue and Las Vegas to Kona routes, which is a function of the same daily frequency and the same 175-seat aircraft.
Phoenix is Southwest's furthest inland Hawaii gateway, which is why both of its Hawaii routes rank at the top of the distance table. Every other mainland origin on the list sits on or near the Pacific coast. Las Vegas is roughly 230 miles closer to the islands than Phoenix, and San Diego, Los Angeles, Ontario, Long Beach, and Burbank are closer still. A route from Phoenix therefore adds several hundred miles over a West Coast departure to the same destination, which is what pushes both Phoenix pairings past everything Las Vegas operates.
Kahului is the second-busiest Hawaii airport after Honolulu and the primary gateway for Maui's resort markets at Wailea, Kaanapali, and Kapalua. Southwest serves it from Phoenix daily, from Las Vegas at 370 flights, and from San Diego at 302. The Las Vegas figure is five flights above daily, which suggests a handful of extra sections during peak demand periods rather than a sustained higher frequency. Across all three gateways, Kahului receives just over 1,000 annual Southwest departures, placing it second behind Honolulu in the carrier's Hawaii network.
1 Phoenix – Honolulu
2,918 miles (4,696 km)
The longest route Southwest Airlines operates connects Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu. The carrier runs 365 flights in each direction, daily year-round, carrying 63,875 seats and generating 186,387,250 available seat miles per direction. That is the highest ASM figure of any single daily route in the network, a direct result of the distance rather than the frequency.
At 2,918 statute miles, the route covers roughly 2,536 nautical miles. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 has a published range of approximately 3,550 nautical miles, which means Phoenix to Honolulu consumes around 71% of the aircraft's capability. That leaves a meaningful margin, but less than it appears on an overwater sector. Hawaii flights require fuel reserves calculated against diversion airports hours away rather than minutes, and headwinds on the eastbound return can erode the margin further. Southwest's entire Hawaii operation runs on a narrowbody designed for continental sectors, and Phoenix to Honolulu is the route that tests it hardest.
The route is also a reminder of how unusual Southwest's long-haul profile is. The carrier built its business on short domestic hops averaging well under two hours, and the five longest routes in its network are all Pacific crossings to a single state. Nothing in the continental United States comes close. Boston to San Diego, the longest mainland route on the list, runs 2,588 miles, 330 miles shorter than Phoenix to Honolulu. Hawaii is where Southwest's network stretches furthest, and Phoenix is the point it stretches from.
