TUNDUMA: THE Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), Songwe Campus, has successfully implemented a research project aimed at identifying and promoting the use of locally available natural materials in construction.
Funded by the European Union’s ERASMUS programme to the tune of Euro 87,681.15, the project seeks to strengthen researchers’ capacity and assess the quality of natural materials, including soil, to ensure their appropriate use in the construction sector.
Speaking during a visit by the Minister for Education, Science and Technology to the campus, DIT Songwe Campus Director, Eng Dr Frank Clement Lujaji, said the project was being implemented through collaboration between DIT, Ardhi University and other European institutions.
He said the funding had been used to build researchers’ capacity and purchase specialised equipment for testing the quality of materials suitable for construction. The investment has strengthened the institution’s ability to conduct scientific and technological research.

Dr Lujaji said the project had already yielded positive results, including the publication of a research article, improved staff capacity in the field and the involvement of DIT students in research activities, giving them opportunities for practical learning.
The project forms part of efforts to implement directives issued by the Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Adolf Mkenda, during his visit to DIT Songwe Campus in August 2024. The directives aimed to strengthen the campus’s development and enhance its contribution to research and technological advancement.
Other directives included renaming DIT Myunga Campus to DIT Songwe Campus to reflect the name of the region, improving infrastructure and strengthening collaboration with major mining companies operating in the area.
In implementing the directive on cooperation with the mining sector, DIT has engaged Shanta Gold, Helium One and Mamba Minerals, which have expressed their willingness to collaborate with the institution.
