Kisumu - Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has publicly cast doubt on the political viability of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna's The Equitable Party (TEP), questioning whether the party has the organisational capacity to mount a credible campaign in the 2027 General Election.

Mudavadi made the remarks on Sunday, October 11, 2026, drawing a sharp contrast between TEP and established parties such as ODM, UDA and Jubilee, which he said have functioning networks across the country.
Mudavadi questions TEP's national presence
The Prime Cabinet Secretary challenged Sifuna and his allies to demonstrate that TEP has county-level structures beyond the capital. He specifically named Kwale, Kisumu, Murang'a and Garissa as counties where TEP's presence is, in his view, non-existent.
"ODM ilikuwa na structures, na iko na structures. UDA ina structures. Jubilee ina structures," Mudavadi said.
He pressed further, asking: "Mniambie hiyo chama ina structure gani Kwale? Hiyo chama ina structure gani hapa Kisumu?"
Mudavadi maintained that any party serious about contesting national elections must first demonstrate that it has organised its membership and leadership at the grassroots level, arguing that without such a foundation, competing meaningfully in a general election is not realistic.
Mudavadi Dismisses Sifuna's Presidential Ambitions
The prime cabinet secretary reserved his sharpest criticism for speculation that TEP could field a presidential candidate in 2027, describing such talk as an attempt to deceive voters.
"Sasa mtu anataka kumdanganya ati kwamba chama ambacho hakina structures, haijafanya hata AGM, haijafanya chochote, ati hiyo ndio itatoa rais?" Mudavadi questioned.
He pointed out that TEP has yet to hold an Annual General Meeting, suggesting the party lacks even the internal administrative milestones expected of a functioning political organisation.
According to Mudavadi, these deficiencies make any presidential ambition from the party's camp premature at best.
Mudavadi's remarks add to the growing scrutiny surrounding Sifuna's political vehicle ahead of the next election cycle, with opponents questioning whether TEP can translate its Nairobi base into a nationally competitive force before 2027.
