NEW YORK (AP) — Tesla reported a decline in profit for the latest quarter as it prepares for a possible merger with Elon Musk’s other big business, SpaceX.
The electric vehicle maker reported third-quarter net income of $787 million, or 22 cents per share, down 44% from the year-earlier period. Excluding certain items, though, earnings per share of 48 cents beat Wall Street analyst expectations by 3 cents.
Revenue was basically flat at $28 billion, falling slightly short of analysts’ forecast.
In a SpaceX conference call Tuesday, Musk said a long-rumored merger with Tesla might be in the works. He said that special committees had been set up at each company to discuss a possible combination, while cautioning that many hurdles remain.
Tesla stock rose 1.6% in after-hours trading after climbing 3.6% during the regular trading session.

Old Kildonan candidates say growing ward not getting share of city resources
Malak Abas 4 minute read 3:25 PM CDT
Old Kildonan’s three candidates for councillor all agree on one thing: their ward’s communities are growing quickly, and they want to see city investments keep up.
Incumbent Coun. Devi Sharma has represented Old Kildonan since 2010, and has been city council’s speaker since 2013, the first woman in Winnipeg’s history to hold the role.
While she ran unopposed and was acclaimed in 2022, this time around, longtime school trustee Greg McFarlane and mechanical engineer Love Randhawa are also in the running.
Sharma said she’s seeking a fifth term because there are some long-term projects underway in Old Kildonan that she believes need an experienced councillor to see through.

Klein calls union’s attack ads ‘dirty politics,’ urges Gillingham to reject support

Mayoral candidate Kevin Klein said attack ads from Winnipeg’s largest union are an example of “dirty politics” and verge on United States-style campaigning.
The pamphlets, signed by the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 500, show a United States flag draped behind Klein, with text stating he has sided with “the broader alt-right political movement” and defends the U.S.
“As Canadians we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard. This is not the politics that we have experienced in the City of Winnipeg. This is not the type of politics we want to experience in Canada,” he said during a Tuesday news conference at his campaign headquarters.
He called on incumbent candidate Scott Gillingham to denounce the ads and reject the union’s campaign support.

Candidates to fill the wide-open St. Vital city council seat are sharing their plans to ease traffic, tighten up development rules, protect trees and improve Winnipeg Transit.
Coun. Brian Mayes led the ward since 2011 but is not running for re-election, guaranteeing a new city councillor will be chosen.
Chris Sigurdson, a Louis Riel School Division trustee and criminal defence lawyer, is competing for the job with Mayes’ endorsement.
Sigurdson said his trustee work over the last 16 years provided a valuable education in local government that he could apply at city hall.
