Residents in flood-hit Launglon Township, Tanintharyi Region, have been affected by an outbreak of diarrhea since last week, according to rescue workers. “Our resources are limited due to the scale of the disaster and the number of people needing assistance,” a local rescue team member told DVB.
The outbreak follows severe flooding and landslides that struck southern Tanintharyi Region on Sept. 24-27, killing more than 30 people, according to local rescue groups. Launglon and Thayetchaung townships, located 12-18 miles (19-28 km) south of the region’s capital Dawei, were among the worst-affected areas.
The National Unity Government (NUG) reported that its local health workers were responding to the crisis in disaster-affected communities in Tanintharyi Region but did not specify the exact locations or services provided.
Regime media reported that authorities provided relief supplies and assistance to 2,401 households, covering more than 9,000 residents of four townships, including Launglon and Thayetchaung. Floods and strong winds damaged 3,341 homes and affected 23,874 people, with 85 per cent of restoration work complete.
Rescue workers in Launglon called for substantial funding, equipment and technical expertise to support long-term recovery, warning that landslide damage has left some communities inaccessible and continues to hamper the delivery of food, medical supplies and safe drinking water.
