PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has saluted Zambia’s independence heroes and heroines on the eve of the country’s 62nd Independence Anniversary.
President Hichilema said Zambia achieved the sovereign right to define its own destiny on Oct. 24, 1964, and began a journey to build a united, peaceful and prosperous nation.
“We honour the courage and sacrifice of our independence heroes and heroines, Kenneth David Kaunda, Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, Alexander Grey Zulu, Humphrey Mulemba, Nalumino Mundia, Mama Julia Chikamoneka, Mama Betty Chilombo Chilunga, among others,” Hichilema said.
This year’s theme is “Zambia at 62: Our journey, our growth, our future.”
President Hichilema said at 62, Zambia reflects on its journey with pride, having walked the path of peace, unity, stability and progress under the motto One Zambia, One Nation.
“We have built schools, hospitals, roads, airports and power stations. We have held elections and seen smooth transitions of leadership,” he said.
The President said the ultimate focus now is the future, with the Grow Zambia Agenda moving the country from economic stabilization to accelerated growth.
“We want to produce more maize, more wheat and more copper. We are generating more electricity, attracting more tourists and facilitating more exports, all while safeguarding the vulnerable and building strong institutions,” he said.
President Hichilema said Zambia is blessed with abundant natural resources that should be protected and used sustainably for present and future generations.
The Head of State called on citizens to recommit themselves to hard and smart work, discipline, integrity and service, and to celebrate the anniversary with joy, unity, peace and responsibility.
