A man dubbed the "Moore Park Rapist" has been confronted by one of his victims in court, as he gives evidence about carrying out a series of "premeditated and violent" sexual attacks against eight women 30 years ago.
Glenn Gary Cameron, now 62, pleaded guilty last month to 13 offences against eight women, including multiple counts of aggravated indecent assault at knifepoint in the early 90s.
Between 1991 and 1993, the culprit behind the attacks in Moore Park in Sydney's eastern suburbs, and the inner west, evaded capture and became known in media reporting as the "Night Stalker", or "Moore Park Rapist".
A recent DNA breakthrough by NSW Police led to Cameron's arrest at Sydney International Airport in early 2024.
One of Cameron's eight victims read out an impact statement to the NSW District Court on Monday, describing how she had lived in a "continuous state of anxiety, panic [and] terror" since she was attacked.
The court heard the woman was 24 years old when a knife-wielding Cameron confronted her as she walked home in Surry Hills in 1992.
"I wish I had not made eye contact with you that afternoon at those set of traffic lights, I was terrified, you had a knife," she said.
"You had the ability to kill me, you didn't kill me, but you killed a big part of me, you killed my trust in others.
"I didn't want to speak your name, yet now I own it, I own more of you than what you took from me back in the day."
The woman said she was angry that Cameron also tried to "worm" his way out of being prosecuted following his arrest, and that "you got to take a piece of me again".
The court heard Cameron held a knife to the woman's throat and rib cage during the attack.
The 62-year-old kept his head down as the woman read out her statement.
Rapist apologises for his offending
Despite his lawyer initially flagging to the court that Cameron would not give any oral evidence, the 62-year-old made his own submission.
The former funeral director, and hospital wardsmen, repeatedly apologised to his victims and told the court he hated himself.
When asked why he never handed himself into police and denied the allegations following his arrest, Cameron said he "didn't have the courage or the guts to do it".
"I'm not denying anything now, everything that was put to me I did … I committed heinous crimes,"
Cameron said.
Earlier in the hearing, Judge John Pickering repeatedly interrupted submissions from Cameron's defence solicitor, questioning how his supposed "troubled upbringing", and drug use would reduce his moral culpability for committing such "premeditated and violent" sexual assaults against eight different women.
His defence said that he justified his attacks saying that he "felt a sense of power", which he did not have during his childhood.
"That's a fairly extreme position because he felt powerless as a young man that then he felt the need to commit violent, premeditated rapes at knife point," Judge Pickering said.
"Thank God he's only one of the very few men that has that behaviour in him because thankfully these kinds of serial rapists are still incredibly rare," Judge Pickering said in a rhetorical manner.
No pleas have been entered for fourteen other charges, including multiple counts of assault with an act of indecency, aggravated sexual assault and detaining a person for advantage, but will be taken into account during sentencing.
Cameron will be sentenced in December.
