WORLD Food Day, observed on 16 October, reminds the world that access to adequate, safe and nutritious food is essential to health and dignity. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has selected “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.” as the theme for World Food Day 2026, highlighting solutions that combine innovation, traditional knowledge and inclusive approaches. This requires action to protect people and planet.
The global food situation remains challenging despite progress. According to the 2026 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, around 645 million people experienced hunger in 2025. At the same time, approximately 2.69 billion people could not afford a healthy diet. Affordability, dietary diversity, food safety, resilience, and access to nutritious foods are equally important.
Pakistan faces nutritional challenges. The World Food Programme reports that 20.7% of the population is undernourished and 40% of children under five are stunted. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification analysis cited by WFP indicates that 7.5 million people, representing 21% of the analyzed population, are experiencing Crisis-level acute food insecurity or worse. These challenges require action across agriculture, health, social protection, education, and environmental sectors. Innovation can help farmers improve productivity, use water efficiently, access climate information and adopt climate-resilient practices. Better storage and food-processing systems can reduce losses, while digital tools can improve access to markets, finance and agricultural advice.
However, innovation should not be measured only by technology or production. Its ultimate value should be judged by whether families can obtain affordable, diverse and nutritious diets. Greater attention is needed to nutrient-rich foods, including vegetables, fruits, pulses, dairy products and eggs, alongside staple crops.
Pakistan also has examples of nutrition action. The Benazir Nashonuma Programme, implemented through the Benazir Income Support Programme with support from WFP, WHO and UNICEF, has reached 4.7 million people since its launch in 2020. In July 2026, the partners announced a three-year extension to protect an additional 3.3 million children and women from malnutrition. An independent evaluation found that children enrolled in the programme were less likely to be stunted at six months.
Climate resilience must remain central to Pakistan’s food planning. Floods, droughts and heatwaves can disrupt agricultural production, livelihoods and food availability, particularly among vulnerable households. Strengthening early warning systems, climate-resilient agriculture, water management and social protection can help communities withstand these shocks.
World Food Day is not only a celebration of food producers; it is a call for action. Pakistan needs food systems that are productive, climate-resilient, affordable, nutrition-sensitive and capable of protecting vulnerable populations. The message of World Food Day 2026 is timely: innovation should reach farmers, markets and households, not remain confined to laboratories. By combining knowledge, technology, local experience and inclusive policies, Pakistan can move towards a future in which every family has access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food.
