A Peru trafficking raid on a Lima nightclub ended with nine people detained and more than 80 women identified as alleged victims. Police moved in on Wednesday 14 October and finished in the early hours of Thursday 15 October, in eastern Lima.
Most of the women came from other countries, mainly Ecuador and Venezuela, two nations whose citizens have left in large numbers in recent years. The case matters to foreign readers because exploitation follows migration routes, and Lima is a major stop for US travellers.
What Police Found in Ate
The Peru trafficking raid was carried out by the national police’s anti-trafficking directorate, according to RPP, a Lima news outlet. The target was a nightclub called Sexi Geishas on Avenida Santa Rosa in Ate, a large district on the eastern side of the capital.
RPP puts the number of alleged victims at 82, while La República, another Lima daily, counts 83. Police also stopped 117 people at the premises for identity checks, and they are not among the nine detained.
Who the Women Are
RPP reports that the women came from five countries. It counts 49 Ecuadorians, 19 Peruvians, 9 Venezuelans, 4 Colombians and 1 Brazilian, while La República counts 50 Ecuadorians.
Ecuador and Venezuela have seen many citizens leave for neighbouring countries during years of economic and security crises. Women in a vulnerable position can be lured by false job offers, a method La República describes in this Peru trafficking raid.
The Nine Detained and the Charge
Police say the nine detained people worked as cashier, security staff and bar staff at the club. They were held in the act and placed at the disposal of the Ministerio Público, Peru’s prosecution service.
The Peru trafficking raid produced an allegation of favorecimiento a la prostitución, which means promoting or profiting from prostitution. Peruvian law lists it among crimes against personal freedom, and all nine are presumed innocent until a court rules.
How the Network Is Said to Work
La República reports that the group recruited women in vulnerable situations in several provinces of Ecuador and other countries with false job offers. It adds that one woman was promised work, taken to the northern city of Piura and exploited there before being moved to Lima.
The same newspaper says victims were shifted between locations to avoid police checks. It reports that the investigation began about three months ago, when officers spotted two Ecuadorian women at a bus terminal in northern Lima.
The Club Is Closed
The municipality of Ate said the nightclub has been closed as part of its control and inspection work in the district. Municipal inspectors took part in the operation, and a non-profit group called Our Rescue supported it, RPP reports.
Police say they will keep investigating to identify other people involved and to establish the full scope of the activity. Readers who want the wider security picture can read The Rio Times guide to Peru’s new crime command for visitors.
What It Means for You
For travellers, the Peru trafficking raid is a reminder that some Lima nightlife venues can be tied to organised crime. Visitors can stick to licensed, well-reviewed venues and should not assume that every club is run lawfully.
For US readers following migration, the case shows that Ecuadorians and Venezuelans on the move face risks long before they reach any border. A separate Rio Times report covers Peru and Venezuela’s plans for expulsion flights for migrants without papers.
What Is Not Known
It is not yet known how long the club operated before the Peru trafficking raid, or who owns it. Police have not said whether the women will testify or whether they will receive shelter or help to return home.
No court hearing for the nine detained people has been announced. Police have also not said whether more arrests are planned or whether other venues are part of the case.
