In a message on UN Day, the UN secretary-general’s special representative for Afghanistan, Rabab Fatima, pledged to “listen, engage” and work alongside Afghans as she begins her role in the country.
“As I begin my responsibilities in Afghanistan, I do so with deep respect for the Afghan people, your culture and rich heritage, and with a commitment to listen, engage, and work alongside you,” Fatima said.
She said Afghanistan faces significant challenges but stressed the talent, aspirations and potential of its people.
“The United Nations remains committed to supporting the people of Afghanistan, advocating for dignity, opportunity, and the well-being of all Afghans,” she said.
Fatima highlighted the role of Afghan women and men, young people, community leaders, teachers, health workers and humanitarian workers who, she said, have continued to serve their communities despite years of challenges.
“Their commitment is a source of hope and inspiration,” she said.

Reflecting on Afghanistan’s relationship with the United Nations, Fatima noted that the country joined the organization in 1946 and said the UN has stood alongside Afghans through decades of conflict, humanitarian crises and periods of progress.
She pointed to the UN’s response to drought, displacement, conflict and other humanitarian emergencies as examples of its engagement in Afghanistan.
Fatima said the United Nations, established in the aftermath of World War II, was founded on the belief that peace can be achieved through dialogue, cooperation and shared humanity.
“The future of Afghanistan belongs to its people, and the United Nations will remain a committed partner as Afghans shape that future,” Fatima said.
