Cam Skattebo knows how to get the conversation back to his running. Keep the football attached.
After finishing the Giants’ Week 6 loss to the New Orleans Saints without a carry, Skattebo is taking responsibility for the mistake that preceded his disappearing act. His latest explanation gets into the mechanics of protecting the ball, and he sounds ready to follow the coaching staff’s instructions.
Cam Skattebo Explains What Went Wrong With His Ball Security
Speaking in a video shared by SNY, Skattebo identified a problem with how he protected the football when a defender knocked it loose.
“It’s actually how I got punched out. I didn’t grab the wrist and I put my arm over the other one,”Skattebo said.
That’s a specific correction for a player whose next opportunity will come with plenty of eyes on his grip. Skattebo pointed directly to the technique his coaches were teaching as he explained how he plans to address it.
“I’m gonna go with what coaches are teaching us, what’s taught, what’s the best way to secure the ball, best way to hold it,” he continued.
The message became even simpler when he moved past the positioning of his arms.
“At the end of the day, I gotta take care of the ball. However that has to happen, I gotta do it. I’ve done it my whole life and it’s simple as that. Take care of the ball and you’ll be just fine,” Skattebo said.

His willingness to explain the mistake matters here. He knows where his technique broke down, and he’s putting the responsibility for correcting it on himself. Now comes the part that requires a handoff.
John Harbaugh and Skattebo Offered Different Explanations for His Usage
The scrutiny followed a strange afternoon against New Orleans. Skattebo had rushed for 59 yards on 13 carries and lost a fumble in Week 5, then went without a touch the following week.
Harbaugh denied that Skattebo had been benched, saying the lack of carries wasn’t planned. Skattebo understood his treatment as punishment for the previous week’s mistake. Those explanations left fans with plenty to argue about. Neither changed the empty rushing line.
There’s also room for improvement beyond holding onto the football. As of Oct. 23, Skattebo sits No. 34 in the 2026 full-seasonPFN’s NFL RB Impact rankings, with a 71.0 grade. The table lists 294 rushing yards, 79 receiving yards, and one total touchdown.

For now, Skattebo has given a clear answer about how he intends to respond. He’ll use the technique his coaches want and accept responsibility for securing the ball. The Giants still have to give him the chance to show that correction in a game. Another afternoon without a carry would make that awfully difficult.
