Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has reportedly warned that it would unveil new targets and weapons, drawing attention to major undersea internet cables crossing the Strait of Hormuz amid tensions with the United States.
Iran’s Fars news agency reported the statement, quoting an IRGC representative.
“Seven major internet cables run beneath the Strait of Hormuz,” the representative said.
“We do not rule out the possibility of war. This time, our response will be harsher. The United States will face serious problems, and the world will face a severe energy crisis,” he said.
“We just want them to know that new targets will be unveiled. New weapons will be unveiled,” he added.
Potential global impact on the internet
The IRGC representative said 07 major cables pass through the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting their importance for global internet connectivity and commercial data transmission.
Damage to these cables could disrupt internet access, telecommunications and digital services, particularly in countries in the Persian Gulf region.
The extent of any disruption would depend on the number of cables damaged and the availability of alternative data transmission routes.
However, Iran’s statement is a warning that the cables could be targeted in a future conflict, not a report that an attack on them has taken place.
As the Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global energy transportation and regional digital communications, security risks in the area have attracted international attention.
