LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Saturday clarified her remarks regarding a teacher accused of beating a student with his shoes, saying her comment had been directed at the teacher’s alleged actions against the child.
In a statement on X, Maryam Nawaz shared a picture of the teacher who was arrested by police after allegedly assaulting a student over the theft of a box of toffees from the school canteen.
“The teacher allegedly assaulted a student with his shoe after a box of toffees was stolen from the school canteen. The teacher has been arrested,” an X user wrote.
Sharing the teacher’s picture, Maryam Nawaz commented: “Beat him black and blue across his face with a shoe. Shame.”
Several social media users criticised the chief minister, interpreting her remarks as an instruction to beat the teacher.
Cheema Vai wrote: “Humiliating a teacher over social media by CM Punjab is not ideal governance.”
Another user, Umer Farooq, said: “No matter how heinous the crime, no one should take the roles of judge and jury into their own hands. Doing so undermines the rule of law and risks creating chaos in society.”

A user identified as Mickey Gill also questioned the comment, writing: “I really really hope that some admin wrote it, otherwise.”
In response, Maryam Nawaz clarified that she had written the comment herself and explained its intended meaning.
No, no admin wrote it. I wrote it myself and it meant that the teacher beat the child black and blue hitting him with a shoe across his face. I hope you get it now.
