KARACHI: The body of a 36-year-old woman was found in a residential flat in Defence Phase 8 on Monday, with further details emerging about the circumstances surrounding her death, ARY News reported, citing police.
The deceased was identified as Shumaila. According to the initial police investigation, she was suspected of having died by suicide after severing her hamstrings.
Police shifted the body to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for an autopsy and completion of the necessary legal formalities.
In the latest development, police said Shumaila’s husband told investigators that his wife had injected a boil on her wrist. Her family also informed police that her mental health was not stable.
South SSP Mahzoor Ali said the deceased woman’s brother had refused to pursue legal action in the case.
Following the discovery of the body, police had launched an investigation to gather further information about the woman, her family and the circumstances surrounding her death.
The latest statements from the husband and family have added details to the ongoing inquiry. However, the exact circumstances of Shumaila’s death have not been established in the information provided by police.
Meanwhile, police have detained several workers for questioning in connection with the murder of an elderly couple whose bodies were found inside their house in North Karachi’s Sir Syed area.
According to police sources, a carpenter, a plumber and a painter were working at the house. The plumber had completed his work, while the carpenter and painter were still working there.
Police have recorded statements of the workers and are questioning them as part of the investigation. Statements of the victims’ close relatives and neighbours have also been recorded, while investigators have obtained CCTV footage from the area.
However, the footage showing people entering and leaving the house is unclear, police said.
A mobile phone recovered from the house has been sent for forensic examination to help investigators gather further evidence. Police are also seeking details from the family members arriving from Canada. The couple’s children are expected to reach Karachi by tomorrow, according to police.
Meanwhile, the post-mortem reports have revealed severe head injuries to both victims. Muhammad Yamin, aged between 65 and 70, and his wife, Nafis Akhtar, aged between 60 and 65, were found dead inside their house, according to the police surgeon.
Both victims had deep and serious injuries to their heads. Investigators suspect they were killed with a heavy, blunt object.
