JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Hundreds of runners in purple briefs took to the streets of Johannesburg on Friday to raise awareness of prostate cancer.
The men took part in the Hollard Daredevil Race, an annual event highlighting what researchers describe as South Africa ’s most common cancer. Organizers say the disease is rarely discussed openly among South African men.
A 2023 study of Black men diagnosed with prostate cancer in Free State province found that fewer than one in four had heard of the disease before their diagnosis.
Another study that year among men in Limpopo province found that almost two-thirds had inadequate awareness of prostate cancer, while more than 80% knew nothing about screening methods.
“Many men have never heard of it, don’t know about PSA (prostate-specific antigen) screening and only present when it is advanced. Caught early, more than 99% of men are alive five years later,” said Andrew Oberholzer, chief executive of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
Some participants were prostate cancer survivors who encouraged other men to get screened.
“I’ve been running long distances for 45 years now and then I’ve also gone through a prostate cancer process. I’m a cancer survivor from prostate,” said participant Riyaad Kriel.

Winnipeg Jets trade Connor Hellebuyck to New Jersey Devils

Connor Hellebuyck got his wish. The Winnipeg Jets finally got an offer they couldn’t refuse. And a long-running sports soap opera has finally ended.
The Jets pulled off a blockbuster deal on Friday morning, shipping their disgruntled franchise goaltender to the New Jersey Devils.
The same Devils, we should point out, who will visit Winnipeg on Nov. 10.
The Jets are receiving forward Dawson Mercer, forward Nick Bjugstad, goaltender Nico Daws and prospect centre Alexander Command — a centre from Sweden who was just selected 12th-overall in the NHL draft this past June. Winnipeg will also receive a couple draft picks: a second-round selection in 2029 and a seventh-round pick in 2027.
DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I came home alone in my own car after a first date with a great new guy I met through my work. Unfortunately, I found my ex-boyfriend in the driveway of my new rental house. He’d fallen asleep in his car, waiting there.
I just lost it! I banged on his window, and yelled, “What are you doing here? Get out of here, and go home!”
He finally sat up, rubbed his eyes and two minutes later he backed out, yelling crude names at me out the window. Then he took off like a shot!
I found out today that somebody we both know told him I was out on a date. That’s why he was drunk and jealous! I want to get rid of him for good, but now he’s not taking my calls, so I can’t even tell him that and re-ditch him!

Eadie faces crowded field — including former councillor — in bid for fifth term in Mynarski

The city’s most crowded council race has a little bit of everything: a long-serving incumbent, a former ward councillor in the 1980s, an unsuccessful candidate in the last municipal election seeking a rematch and three political newcomers.
Mynarski has long been led by Coun. Ross Eadie, who was first elected in 2010 and is seeking his fifth term. Five challengers want the job: Natalie Smith, who ran in the ward in 2022 and came in second, Terry Wachniak, Harold Brazil, Laurie Kozak and Ayaz Noor Mohammed.
It’s the city ward with the largest number of candidates this year.
Eadie describes himself as “a dancer, a singer and a city councillor” who has made inroads on garbage pickup, back-lane cleaning and earning the respect of his fellow council members by being the first Mynarski councillor to be appointed to executive policy committee, the mayor’s inner circle, in decades.

Manitoba’s provincial chief medical officer is resigning from his position at Shared Health, citing the role’s demands and work environment challenges in an email viewed by the Free Press.
Dr. José François, who’s held the executive position since April 2024, sent an email to provincial medical specialty leads that said his final day will be Jan. 17, 2027, after he submitted his resignation Wednesday. Several other senior leaders have departed the provincial health authority in recent months.
“Serving in this role has been a privilege,” François, a longtime family physician from Ste. Anne, wrote in the email.
He said his “greatest pleasure” was working alongside and supporting an “exceptional group” of provincial medical specialty leads and chief medical officers.
Several masked and armed suspects forced their way into a home on Lake Ridge Road in Winnipeg’s west suburbs late on Monday, terrorizing the elderly residents as they robbed the place.
Winnipeg Police Service major crimes investigators, who are asking the public for assistance, are trying to identify the suspects and learn about their movements in the area before and after the robbery, said police spokesman Const. Stephen Spencer.
“It would definitely help to have some more information as to who the individuals are. It would be great if somebody had video of the individuals prior to arriving at this location, when they weren’t wearing face coverings, or after,” said Spencer.
“If neighbours in the area maybe noticed something suspicious, around the Lakeridge Park area… around that time of night, if they did see something suspicious, definitely come forward — it could be helpful with solving this case.”
