The race for the College Football Playoff is heating up in the SEC as No. 22 LSU hosts No. 16 Mississippi State on Saturday. Both teams are coming off defeats and will clash at Tiger Stadium in a mid-season rivalry that promises major fireworks as they fight for a spot among the conference’s elite.
Both teams have dealt with injuries in recent weeks, and Mississippi State looks to bounce back after suffering its first loss of the season to No. 6 Alabama two weeks ago. The Bulldogs had a bye week to regroup, giving third-year head coach Jeff Lebby extra time to prepare for an LSU team that Mississippi State hasn’t beaten since 2020.
LSU has won three straight meetings against Mississippi State, with its last two victories coming by at least 15 points. First-year head coach Lane Kiffin will look to continue that dominance as the Tigers aim for another convincing win over the Bulldogs. LSU’s most recent trip to Starkville ended in a commanding 41-14 victory three years ago.
The Tigers are looking to bounce back after a disappointing overtime loss to Kentucky last weekend, which sent the Tigers tumbling 12 spots in the AP Poll. Meanwhile, Mississippi State could be without star quarterback Kamario Taylor, who remains questionable with a foot injury. Taylor has thrown 17 touchdown passes this season, but if he can’t play, freshman Parker Puckett could step in as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback.
