ANC Dullah Omar Region chairperson Ndithini Tyhido has resigned as a City of Cape Town councillor to focus on the party’s campaign ahead of the local government elections.
The party confirmed that Tyhido had stepped down as a proportional representation (PR) councillor and, consequently, as leader of the opposition in the council, with immediate effect from October 22.
In a statement, the ANC said Tyhido had not resigned as regional chairperson or as a member of the party.
“Comrade Tyhido formally tendered his resignation as a councillor in writing in terms of Section 27(1)(a) of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act 117 of 1998, with immediate effect as of 22 October 2026,” the statement said.
The party said his decision was driven by his commitment to dedicate his time and energy to the final days of the ANC’s local government election campaign.
ANC urges Tyhido to focus on election campaign
The ANC said it appreciated Tyhido’s dedication and his efforts in representing the people of Cape Town.
With the election campaign entering its final phase, the party urged him to use the time available to mobilise communities and work towards an ANC victory.
“He remains committed to the election campaign and continues to serve as the face of the ANC in the region,” the statement said.
The party called on Tyhido to use his experience to mobilise communities and secure what it described as a decisive mandate to build a better Cape Town.
Tyhido remains the ANC Dullah Omar Region chairperson despite stepping down from his council role.
