Evelyn, the chief executive officer of 44 Clothing, has broken her silence following her disappearance, apologising to her family and friends while recounting an alleged disagreement with her boyfriend, Derrick, shortly before the incident.
The fashion entrepreneur made this known in a statement shared after she was found, explaining that the disagreement began a day before her disappearance following a post published by a blog.
According to Evelyn, Derrick accused her of being the person supplying information to the blog, a development she said added to the emotional difficulties she had been experiencing.
She apologised to her loved ones for the distress caused by her disappearance, acknowledging that her emotions had influenced her actions.
“I’m really sorry to my family and friends for allowing my emotions to get the best of me. A day before my disappearance, a blog made a post, and my boyfriend, Derrick, accused me of being the one sending information to the blog,” she said.
“Despite everything I’ve been going through, I now have to deal with heartbreak as well,” she added.
Gwamnishu gives update
Meanwhile, Harrison Gwamnishu, who participated in efforts to locate Evelyn, disclosed that he met with her in Lagos after she was found.
Gwamnishu said Evelyn was being taken to the Victoria Island Divisional Police Headquarters, where her disappearance had initially been reported, to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He expressed concern that Evelyn had reportedly been away for several days without contacting her family, noting that her absence had left her relatives worried and anxious about her safety.
According to him, the efforts to locate her were driven by concern for her well-being and the uncertainty surrounding her whereabouts.
Allegations against boyfriend
Gwamnishu also criticised Derrick over allegations that he left Evelyn alone on a bridge late at night and drove away without her mobile phones.
However, the circumstances surrounding the allegation had not been independently established, and the account did not include a response from Derrick.
Gwamnishu suggested that heartbreak and emotional distress might have played a role in the incident, although the full details of what happened remained unclear.
He maintained that his involvement in the search was motivated by concern for Evelyn and her family, adding that he would be willing to assist in similar situations in the future.
Disappearance sparks public concern
Evelyn’s disappearance had generated widespread concern on social media, with users sharing information and appealing for assistance in locating her.
The development attracted public attention as updates about the search circulated online, prompting questions about her whereabouts and the circumstances surrounding her absence.
Before her statement, reports had highlighted efforts by Gwamnishu and other concerned individuals to locate the businesswoman and provide updates on the search.
Following her discovery, Evelyn’s account offered an explanation of the disagreement she said preceded her disappearance, while Gwamnishu’s comments provided further information about the search and the planned engagement with the police.
The incident has also drawn attention to the importance of emotional well-being, communication and personal safety in relationships.
Gwamnishu urged people to communicate openly, care for one another and take emotional distress seriously, emphasising that relationships should not come at the expense of personal peace and safety.
