Similar Crimes Have Been Reported Nationwide
Chicago's warning is the latest in a string of marketplace-related robbery cases reported across the country.
In Portland, Oregon, police highlighted the issue after investigators said an electric bicycle listed for sale through Facebook Marketplace was stolen at gunpoint during a June 2026 transaction. Detectives later arrested two juvenile suspects. Portland police said their Major Crimes Unit had investigated at least 10 similar incidents during 2026 involving online marketplace deals that escalated into robberies or other crimes.
Colorado prosecutors also recently secured a conviction in a case involving a Facebook jewelry sale. Authorities said a woman advertising jewelry online was robbed inside her Aurora apartment in June 2024 after two men allegedly posed as buyers. Prosecutors said firearms were displayed, jewelry worth about $20,000 was stolen, and the victim's children were threatened during the incident. One defendant was later convicted on multiple felony charges.
In Illinois, Tobias W. Taylor was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated robbery stemming from a Facebook Marketplace shoe sale. Prosecutors said the victim was threatened with a handgun during the arranged exchange in Peoria.
Meanwhile, the Jackson Police Department in Mississippi has separately warned residents about an increase in scams and armed robberies connected to Marketplace transactions.
Safety Advice for Buyers and Sellers
Law enforcement agencies are encouraging users of Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp and similar platforms to take steps to reduce risk.
Recommended precautions include meeting in well-lit public places, using designated exchange zones such as police station parking lots, bringing another person to the transaction and researching buyers or sellers beforehand.
Police also advise using digital payment methods when possible, verifying details about items before meeting and leaving immediately if anything about a transaction appears suspicious.
What Police Want the Public to Do
Chicago police are asking residents to remain aware of their surroundings, report suspicious activity and contact authorities immediately if they encounter a robbery.
Investigators also recommend preserving any available surveillance footage, obtaining witness information when possible and avoiding attempts to chase fleeing suspects.
Anyone with information about the Chicago robberies is asked to contact Area Two detectives or submit an anonymous tip through the department's tip line.
