According to the Ministry of Defence, the initiative is part of broader efforts to improve military aviation capabilities through international cooperation, investment in modern equipment and personnel development.
The American-made MD500s are compact military helicopters used for reconnaissance, supporting ground troops and carrying out light attack operations, depending on how they are equipped.
How will the modernised MD500 helicopters boost KDF operations?
Speaking during the reception ceremony, Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya said the modernised helicopters would improve the military's capabilities in reconnaissance, aerial support, mobility and other critical security operations.
Chief of the Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri praised the partnership between Kenya, South Korea and the United States, saying it provides a foundation for stronger security cooperation.
He noted that the enhanced capabilities would support counter-terrorism operations, peace support missions, humanitarian assistance and broader security efforts.
Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Keter also welcomed the collaboration, thanking South Korea for providing the aircraft and the United States for its technical expertise in installing advanced digital systems.
Keter further acknowledged the Ministry of Defence for its strategic leadership and support, reaffirming the Kenya Army's commitment to protecting the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
What role did South Korea and the US play in the deal?
South Korean Ambassador to Kenya Kang Hyung-shik said the transfer of military equipment reflected the growing diplomatic, economic and security ties between the two countries.
He noted that the partnership demonstrated mutual trust and a shared commitment to regional peace and stability.
Meanwhile, Susan Burns, the US Chargé d'Affaires, highlighted the importance of trilateral cooperation in addressing common security challenges and promoting stability across the region.
She said modern military equipment and international partnerships strengthened Kenya's role as a security partner, particularly in counter-terrorism operations in East Africa and peacekeeping missions abroad.
Brigadier General Jayson Becker, Deputy Commanding Officer of the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, also praised the partnership, describing Kenya as a key partner in efforts to stabilise the Horn of Africa.
He noted that the helicopters, technical support and personnel training would strengthen Kenya's ability to respond to complex security threats.
