At least 139 migrants, including 15 children, died after a boat traveling from Djibouti to Yemen capsized overnight between October 8 and 9.
The vessel was carrying approximately 300 people when it overturned, according to British media reports. More than 60 passengers were rescued, while over 80 remained missing.
All of the reported survivors were Ethiopian nationals. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said 42 of the bodies recovered so far were those of women.
The boat was making a crossing used by migrants from the Horn of Africa who hope to reach Gulf countries in search of safety and employment. Thousands undertake the dangerous journey each year, according to the IOM.
Migrants using this route come from countries including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, and Djibouti. Yemen serves as a transit point for those attempting to continue toward the Gulf.
The reported death toll and number of missing passengers indicate that most of those aboard either died or remained unaccounted for. The cause of the capsizing was not specified in the available report.
