Three South African men turned a simple national anthem singalong into comedy gold. A split-screen video posted by TikTok user @costa_nugget on 22 October 2026 quickly went viral, and it is easy to see why. The concept was straightforward: divide the verses of Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika among three men, each taking on a different section. What followed was a masterclass in South African irony.
The creator stepped up first, delivering the opening Xhosa and Sotho verses with impressive fluency and confidence. The group held it together through those lines. Then came the Afrikaans verse, assigned to the young Zulu man in the group. He stumbled through it, fumbling the words until all three collapsed into uncontrollable laughter.
SA's language twist that got everyone talking
The unexpected reversal is exactly what made the clip travel so fast. South Africans online immediately recognised themselves in the moment, sharing their own complicated relationships with the country's 11 official languages. The comments section filled up with laughing reactions and confessions from viewers who admitted they had spent years studying Afrikaans in school and still could not string a sentence together.
The warmth in the video struck a chord too. Despite the stumbles and the giggles, the three men were clearly having the best time, and that energy translated directly to the people watching.
