Gujarat is planning a major makeover of Bet Dwarka, the island associated with Lord Krishna, with a proposed corridor aimed at improving pilgrim facilities, upgrading infrastructure and creating new tourism attractions. As per a NDTV report, the project draws inspiration from large religious redevelopment initiatives such as the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi and the Mahakal Lok corridor in Ujjain.
The proposed development is expected to combine heritage conservation, easier temple access and eco-tourism. The initiative follows the opening of Sudarshan Setu, which connects mainland Gujarat with Bet Dwarka. The bridge has already changed how pilgrims reach the island, reducing their dependence on ferry services. The Gujarat government now aims to build on that connectivity by developing the surrounding area and making visits more convenient throughout the year.
What is the Bet Dwarka corridor project?
Bet Dwarka, also known as Beyt Dwarka, is an island off the coast of Gujarat near Okha. It is associated with the life and traditions of Lord Krishna and attracts devotees visiting the Dwarkadhish temple and other religious sites in the region. The proposed corridor is intended to improve the visitor experience through better roads, upgraded public infrastructure and organised access to important religious locations. The larger vision is to develop the island as a spiritual destination while also promoting its coastal environment.
According to the NDTV report, the state has initiated the land acquisition process for the project's first phase. A notification covers land measuring around one hectare, or approximately 2.5 acres, with the administration tasked with facilitating the development plan. Authorities have also undertaken action against encroachments in areas earmarked for public infrastructure.
Underwater darshan: Can visitors see the submerged city of Dwarka?
One of the most intriguing elements associated with the proposed development is the possibility of underwater viewing experiences connected to Dwarka's submerged past. Dwarka holds a special place in Hindu tradition as the kingdom of Lord Krishna. Stories of the ancient city sinking beneath the sea have long captured the imagination of devotees, historians and visitors.

The surrounding waters have also attracted archaeological interest. However, the historical and archaeological evidence concerning ancient settlements in the region is a separate question from the religious account of Krishna's Dwarka. An underwater viewing facility could offer visitors a different way to experience the coastal landscape and explore the region's maritime heritage. Such an attraction would also require careful planning because the area has a sensitive marine environment.
108-foot Krishna statue among the proposed attractions
A 108-foot statue of Lord Krishna is another planned structure associated with the broader vision for Bet Dwarka. If developed as proposed, the statue could become a prominent landmark for pilgrims and tourists. The number 108 also has religious significance in several Hindu traditions, where it is associated with prayer beads, devotional practices and sacred counting.
Heritage streets and better facilities for pilgrims
The proposed heritage street development is intended to improve the experience of people moving through the religious precincts. Better pedestrian routes, road improvements and organised public spaces can help manage crowds, especially during festivals and peak pilgrimage periods. Authorities have also said that removing encroachments from land reserved for public use is part of the effort to create space for pilgrim amenities.
Marine tourism and the ecological challenge
Bet Dwarka's appeal extends beyond its religious significance. Its coastal location offers opportunities for marine tourism, nature-based activities and greater awareness of the region's biodiversity. The wider tourism vision includes interest in coral reefs, water sports and dolphin viewing. These attractions could broaden the island's appeal to families, younger travellers and nature enthusiasts.
But tourism in a marine environment requires safeguards. Coral reefs and other coastal habitats can be damaged by poorly managed visitor activity, pollution and construction. Any new attractions would need suitable environmental clearances and operating rules. A balance between religious tourism and ecological protection will be important if the island is to attract more visitors without putting pressure on its natural resources.
Sudarshan Setu: The bridge changing access to Bet Dwarka
Connectivity is one of the most significant parts of the transformation underway in the region. Sudarshan Setu connects Okha on the mainland with Bet Dwarka. The approximately 2.3-kilometre bridge was inaugurated in February 2024 and was built at a reported cost of around Rs 979 crore.
The bridge features decorative elements inspired by Lord Krishna, including images and verses from the Bhagavad Gita along its pedestrian sections. Before the bridge was opened, visitors largely depended on boats to reach the island. The road connection has made the journey more convenient and reduced the difficulties associated with ferry travel, particularly when weather conditions disrupt services.
How the project compares with the Kashi and Mahakal corridors
The proposed Bet Dwarka development follows a broader trend in religious tourism infrastructure, in which governments seek to improve access to prominent pilgrimage destinations while upgrading the areas around temples. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi transformed access between the temple and the Ganga riverfront. In Ujjain, the Mahakal Lok development created a larger public space around the Mahakaleshwar temple, with landscaped areas, sculptures and visitor facilities.
Bet Dwarka's needs are different because it is an island with a coastal ecosystem and a maritime setting. Better roads and temple facilities may be central to the project, but any underwater tourism component would also require environmental safeguards. For Gujarat, the ambition is to make a visit to Krishna's land more accessible and comfortable while giving the destination a stronger tourism identity.
